N Jagadeesan’s blistering 52 run knocks helped Chepauk Super Gillies to beat Salem Spartans by massive four wickets in Match 5 of TNPL 2021 at MA Chidambaram stadium on Wednesday. Jagadesan’s quick half-century helped the Defending Champions to chase an average target of 143 runs with seven balls to spare.
Chasing a target of 143 runs Chepauk was reeling at 26 runs for 4 wickets down on the 7th over. However, Jagadeesan’s 52 runs knock steadied Chepauk’s submerging innings. Jagadeesan along with U Sasidev added 77 runs for the fifth wicket. Together the duo helped the Chepauk Gillies to chase the target in the allotted 20 overs. Jagadeesan smashed the ball all around the stadium with good support from Sasidev.
By the time Jagadeesan was removed from the crease, Chepauk needed 40 runs from 33 balls. Sasidev too dismissed in the 18th over but Harish Kumar (27*) along with Jaganath Sinivas (8*) took Chepauk Gillies home in 18.5 overs. For Salem Spartans G Periyasamy (2-28), allrounder Vijay Shankar (1-29), and leg-spinner M Ashwin (2-26) starred with the ball.
Earlier batting first, Salem Spartans finished on 142-7. The opener Gopinath’s 33 runs knock along with Daryl Ferrario’s 39 runs & Shankar’s 32 runs helped Spartans to post a competitive target on board. For Chepauk Gilles Sonu Yadav starred with the ball by finishing with figures of 3 for 21 from four overs he bowled. The victory was crucial for Chepauk gillies to progress ahead in the tournament. If Chepauk had lost this match then the rest of the matches would have been must-win matches for them. By winning this match, Chepauk Gillies is placed on the third spot in the TNPL 2021 Points Table with three points.
