Nathan Sowter joins Durham on Loan for rest of the T20 Blast

England’s leg-spinner Nathan Sowter has joined Durham on Loan for the rest of the Vitality T20 Blast & is all set to leave Middlesex on a permanent basis when his contract expires later in 2022. Sowter who has been Middlesex’s third-highest wicket-taker in T20 history is yet to feature in their fixture this year. Thus he has been actively seeking a loan move & now looks set to make his Durham debut against Lancashire on Friday night after agreeing to join them until mid-July.

He is available to play in all formats & is unlikely to feature for Middlesex again. Sowter took 15 wickets in Vitality T20 Blast in 2021 with an economy rate of 7.50 but the emergence of two spinners through the Middlesex academy allrounder Luke Hollman and left-arm spinner Thilan Walallawita – has made his services surplus for the Middlesex club.

The club’s management has also opted to fill one of their two overseas spots for the Blast on a spinner- Mujeeb-Ur-Rahman who is set to replace Chris Green. This means that Sowter will not get a place in the Middlesex squad even when they have fielded three spinners on the same side.

According to sources, Sowter was told shortly before the start of the Blast that he was unlikely to feature in their plans for the Blast & over the past two weeks he has been looking to move to another team on a loan basis.

“Sowter hasn’t been selected for any first-team action this year due to the progression of other players within the squad,” Alan Coleman, Middlesex’s head of performance, said.

“We have made a conscious decision to give match experience and opportunities to those players, with an eye on building our longer-term plans. Sowter is a great bloke and we wish him every success during his loan spell with Durham at the Riverside.”

Scott Borthwick, Durham’s leg-spinning all-rounder is unavailable for Friday night’s match due to a wrist injury that required an injection, so the club has signed Sowter as cover. If he performs well for Durham over the last few weeks then he would be able to secure a place in the club on a permanent basis.

Middlesex started the season brightly winning their opening three matches but now have lost four matches in a row, while Durham are eighth on the Points table after winning two & losing five matches from seven games they have played.
