New Zealand Cricket announces Central Contracts for 2022-2023 Season

New Zealand Cricket announces Central Contracts for the upcoming 2022-2023 season. The major absentee from the centrally contracted players list is all-rounder James Neesham while Michael Bracewell earns his maiden central contract. New Zealand’s left-arm spinner Ajaz Patel returns to the 20-player central contracts list.

Ross Taylor who retired from International Cricket will not appear on the contract list for the first time since 2006. James Neesham who hasn’t played a Test since 2017 has featured in nine T20Is over the last 12 months for New Zealand including the World Cup where he amassed just 92 runs in seven innings at a strike rate of 135.29 & sclaped three wickets with an economy of 8.20.

However, Gary Stead doesn’t rule out the possibility of Neesham featuring in the National team.

“It doesn’t mean that Jimmy Neesham won’t play for New Zealand again,” Stead said. “It’s the process of contracting, not the process of selection.”

After the IPL 2022, where he has only played one match for Rajasthan Royals so far, he will head to England for a T20 Blast stint with Northamptonshire and could yet come into consideration for New Zealand’s upcoming limited-overs series.

Bracewell who was recently added to the New Zealand Test squad for the England Test tour effectively replaces Neesham in the 20 players list. Bracewell made his International debut in march in a series against the Netherlands where he was adjudged the Super Smash Player of the Year.

Meanwhile, Ajaz Patel makes a comeback to the centrally contracted players list despite not featuring in the Test team since his historic 10-wicket haul in an innings against India in the second Test held in Mumbai in December 2021. He also bags a couple of memorable performances including the five-match T20I series in Bangladesh, in September, where he emerged as the top wicket-taker for the side & also helped New Zealand clinch a rare Test series victory over England at Edgbaston in June 2021.

“Finalising the list seems to get tougher by the year,” Stead said. “The busy international calendar means we’re calling on a wider base of talent these days and the likes of Michael Bracewell are testament to the depth of that talent.”

“Michael’s been consistently performing on the domestic circuit for seasons now and we certainly see him as an international prospect in all three formats.”

“It’s great to see Ajaz back on the list after narrowly missing out last season. His value as our leading red-ball spinner is clear and we’re excited to see the role he could play in the Test team going forward.”

New Zealand Men’s team has a busy 2022-2023 season ahead of them. Firstly New Zealand’s Test team will depart for England at the weekend ahead of their three-match Test series next month. After the completion of their Test tour, they will play limited-overs series against Ireland, Scotland, Netherlands, and West Indies which takes them through to August.
