The Mumbai team has been invited by Pankaj Khimji, the head of the Oman Cricket Board to play five to six T20 games ahead of the T20 World Cup 2021. These matches will act as preparatory matches for the Oman National team which will be participating in the T20 World Cup 2021 in the October-November window.
The invitation is understood to have been sent by Duleep Mendis, the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of OC, to Sanjay Naik, the secretary of the Mumbai Cricket Association (MCA). The MCA has accepted the invitation confirmed Mendis, a former Sri Lanka Captain. “Yes Mumbai team will be traveling and the details are being worked out,” Mendis told Cricbuzz.
The Mumbai team is set to leave for Muscat on August 19. The arrangement is beneficial for both teams as Oman will get some quality practice ahead of the T20 World Cup 2021 & Mumbai team will get a chance to play with a national team before the start of the Indian domestic season. Oman has been qualified for the T20 World Cup & will be hosting six first-round matches of the ICC T20 World Cup 2021.
Mumbai team had won the Vijay Hazare one-day Tournament under Prithvi Shaw’s captaincy last year but has not done well in the Mushtaq Ali T20 tournament. With Prithvi Shaw currently in England to support the Indian test squad in the ongoing England test series, Mumbai will have to look for a new captain. Shreyas Iyer has recovered from shoulder surgery & will be in UAE with the Delhi Capitals squad to prepare for the second leg of the IPL 2021.
MCA Officials, who have confirmed the Oman tour have said that the Mumbai team will be finalized after the selectors consult the chief selector, Amol Muzumdar. Mumbai selector Gulam Parkar, a former India player, had worked in Oman Cricket Board for a long time before returning to Mumbai recently.
