Paraag Marathe to step down as the Chairman of USA Cricket

Paraag Marathe will resign from the post of the Chairman of USA Cricket after overseeing a fresh election for the role of independent directors at the USA Board. By resigning, Marathe will end his four years-long stint at the helm of affairs of USA Cricket after six months of CEO Iain Higgins’ resignation.

Marathe who is also the President of the 49ers enterprises and executive vice president of Leeds Football Club is the first chairman of USA Cricket, the national governing body that was set up with the support of ICC after the now-defunct USACA was expelled by the ICC.

During his tenure, the board has shown interest in staging World Events in the United Nations. USA Cricket is all set to co-host the ICC T20 World Cup 2022. Marathe’s exit will not affect the staging of the World event in the USA as according to reports, ICC CEO, Geoff Allardice is currently on a visit to the USA & is satisfied with the progress made by the USA Cricket Board in the bid to host the World Cup.

Marathe’s tenure was damaged by litigations brought against him & three other directors of the board by Venu Pisike and Srini Salver, who also currently serve as directors on the board. The duo argued over the legitimacy of Marathe’s re-appointment as Chairman & also demanded an amendment to the constitution to quash a clause that prohibited members to vote before serving a year’s tenure as a member in a good position. Pisike has claimed the resignation to be part of an ‘agreement’ that made them withdraw the lawsuit.

“Thank you to everyone associated with USA Cricket for their commitment to building a strong foundation for the sport in the United States through collaboration over the last three-plus years,” said Marathe.

“I am pleased with the direction that has been set for cricket in this country, especially in light of the many unforeseen challenges we’ve faced, and the time is right for new leadership to see through the next phase of growth for the sport. My top priority is to ensure a smooth transition that will continue the upward trajectory of the sport. Cricket already features a hugely passionate community of players, fans, and advocates in this country and I will continue to be supportive of the sport moving forward” added Marathe.
