Ranji Trophy 2022: Wriddhiman Saha will not play for the Bengal team in the Ranji Trophy 2022 knockout fixtures due to unresolved issues with the State Association. And if the issues didn’t get resolved then Saha will ask the Cricket Association of Bengal to issue a no-objection certificate to continue his domestic career elsewhere.
All the chaos began in February with a quote from the Cricket Association of Bengal (CAB) joint secretary Debabrata Das, where he accused Saha of giving “all sorts of excuses” to “skip” Ranji matches. Wriddhiman Saha’s wife Romi said that Saha got hurt from Das’s comments & had approached CAB Secretary Avishek Dalmiya who assured Saha that Das had been speaking in a personal capacity & his comments had no connection with what the board opines about one of its senior players.
As Saha’s name got dragged into the public domain, he wanted that the issue should be addressed before he would take the field for Bengal again. Dalmiya agreed & both of them decided that they would look into it after the end of the IPL 2022. Then, on May 16, the Bengal squad for the knockouts came out and Saha was surprised that his name was in it.
According to sources Saha had another interaction with Dalmiya this week where he reinstated his stance about Das’s comments &, in case the dispute could not be resolved, asked CAB for a no-objection certificate. The immediate result of the discussion is that Saha will not be a part of the Bengal side that will play the Ranji Trophy quarter-final against Jharkhand starting on June 6.
“The Cricket Association of Bengal wanted Wriddhiman Saha to play for Bengal at this crucial juncture especially when Bengal would be fighting in the Knockout stage in a bid to win the Ranji Trophy after becoming the top-ranked team in the country at the end of the Group Stage,” Dalmiya was quoted as saying on a CAB press release on Thursday.
“I had expressed this to Wriddhiman and had requested him to reconsider his decision. However, Wriddhiman has now communicated to us that he is not willing to play the Ranji Knockouts.”
Das’s comments came on the back of Saha’s reluctance to play for Bengal at the start of the Ranji Trophy 2022 when he took leave citing family issues. This was also the time when he had been dropped from India’s Test side on their South Africa tour.
“Tell me, why should Wriddhi [Saha] not play in the Ranji Trophy for Bengal?” Das was quoted in the Sangbad Pratidin on February 22.
“He is not in the Indian team, why should he not play for Bengal? Then we have to assume that he feels no responsibility towards Bengal.
“In the past, too, there have been many occasions when he has refused to play for Bengal. When we have spoken to him, he has given all sorts of excuses and skipped games. Sometimes it’s body ache, sometimes he has a pain in his leg,” Das added to his statement.
Wriddhiman Saha is currently with Gujarat Titans who are slated to play the IPL final on May 29 at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad with the winner of the Qualifier 2 to be held on Friday.
