Rashmi Silva named in Sri Lanka’s 15-member squad for Commonwealth Games

Uncapped Sri Lankan leg-spinner Rashmi Silva has been named in 15-member Sri Lanka Women’s squad for the upcoming Commonwealth Games 2022. This is the first time that Cricket will be a part of the international multi-sporting event.

Rashmi Silva had a fascinating ODI debut against India in the recently concluded home series. She scalped five wickets and scored vital 66 runs. However, Silva is yet to make her T-20 debut which is the official format of the Commonwealth Games 2022 in Birmingham, England.

Vishmi Gunaratne has also been included in the side for the Commonwealth Games 2022. Gunaratne made her debut at the CWG Qualifiers in January this year. She performed marvelously against India in the T-20 series where she recorded her highest score of 45 and put up a valuable partnership alongside Chamari Attapathtu.

Notably, wicketkeeper batter Kaushani Nuthyangana, Hansima Karunaratne, and pacers Tharika Sewwandi and Sathya Sandeepani have been excluded from the squad. The players had struggled to perform and display a sluggish performance against India.

Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC) has focused on an all-round approach to opt for a competitive side. Batter Harshitha Samawickrama has been backed by the selection committee in spite of a dull performance against the Indian team. However, she had played a great hand at the Qualifiers

The most astonishing and splendid part of the Sri Lankan squad is the selection of destructive all-rounders. In form players, Nilakshi de Silva, Hasini Perera, and Kavisha Dilhari will feature in the middle order and play the crucial all-round element. Prabhodini and Kanchana will lead the pace attack whereas Ranaweera and Ranasinghe will be assigned the responsibility to manage the spin department.

Sri Lanka has been placed in Group B at the Commonwealth Games 2022. They will face England in their opening game on July 30. They will then take on New Zealand on August 2 and South Africa in their last pool stage fixture on August 4.

The Commonwealth Games 2022 will commence on 28th July 2022 and conclude on 8th August 2022.

Here is the complete Sri Lanka Women’s squad for Commonwealth Games 2022:

Chamari Athapaththu (capt), Hasini Perera, Harshitha Samarawickrama, Vishmi Gunaratne, Malsha Shehani, Nilakshi de Silva, Kavisha Dilhari, Ama Kanchana, Achini Kulasuriya, Inoka Ranaweera, Udeshika Prabodhani, Sugandika Kumari, Rashmi de Silva, Oshadi Ranasinghe Anushka Sanjeewani
