In a big development, Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC) has lifted the ban imposed on Kusal Mendis, Danushka Gunathilaka and Niroshan Dickwella on Friday. As per reports, all three will be available for selection for the upcoming ODI series against Zimbabwe.
For those of you who don’t know, the trio earlier breached the Covid-19 protocols during Sri Lanka’s tour of England. As a result of that, they were banned by SLC for one year from playing the sport. However, as per the recent development, Sri Lankan Cricket has lifted the ban, which means they could be added to Sri Lanka’s squad for the upcoming ODI series against Zimbabwe.
Sri Lanka is scheduled to play against Zimbabwe for a three-match ODI series. The first ODI is set to be played on 16th January 2022, while the second and third ODI will be played on 18th and 21st January 2022. The Pallekele International Cricket Stadium will host all three matches.
Recently, Danushka Gunathilaka took everyone by surprise after announcing his retirement from Test Cricket. He last played a Test match for Sri Lanka back in 2018 against New Zealand. He played only 8 Tests in his international cricket career, scoring 299 runs at an average of 18.7.
“It has always been an honour to play for my country and I hope to contribute to the best of my ability in the future by continuing to represent Sri Lanka whenever I am called upon to do so,” Gunathilaka told according to a report from Newswire.
Sri Lanka enjoyed a great outing in the ICC T20 World Cup 2021. They finished at the top of the table in Group A in the qualifying round. Impressive performances helped them reach the Super 12 stage, where they won 2 matches out of five and finished the stage at number four position in Group 1.
