PCB has appointed former Australian opener Matthew Hayden & Veteran Proteas Pacer Vernon Philander as coaches of the Pakistan National team for the upcoming ICC T20 World Cup 2021.
The decision was announced by Chairman Ramiz Raja during a live media interaction at the National High-Performance Center in Lahore on Monday (September 13). Speaking on Hayden’s appointment Ramiz Raja said, “The Australian can bring some aggression into the team. He has experience of winning World Cups and was a world-class player himself. Having an Australian in the dressing room will be of great benefit for us.”
Matthew Hayden retired from International Cricket in January 2009 after enjoying an illustrious career on cricket field & since then he has been a regular in the broadcasting arena ever since. While Matthew Hayden doesn’t have much coaching experience, he knows a thing or two about clinching world titles & his presence will benefit Pakistan in peak situations during the marquee event.
On the appointment of Vernon Philander, Ramiz Raja said that the former South African pacer has a great expertise in the field of bowling & his past experiences of performing against top teams at crucial events will benefit young Pakistani pacers.
“I know Vernon, and he has some phenomenal performances against leading teams, including Australia. I hope the two will help Pakistan cricket in performing at their best during the T20 World Cup,” said Raja, PCB chairman.
“I think Pakistan team needs a new direction. These coaches [Hayden and Philander] are appointed till the [T20] World Cup,” said Raja. “Going forward, we will have to carry out an extensive exercise, in this regard, in order to look for people who fit our model”, Raja added.
“Our objective is to give this team the best possible options, so that it leads to improvement in performance,” concluded the Ramiz Raja.
Ramiz Raja took over the captaincy from Ehsan Mani on Monday. He becomes the fourth international cricketer to head the PCB after Abdul Hafeez Kardar (1972-1977), Javed Burki (1994-1995) and Ijaz Butt (2008-2011).
Pakistan Head Coach Misbah-Ul-Haq & Bowling Coach Waqar Younis had stepped down from their roles
Just few hours after the announcement of Pakistan’s ICC T20 World Cup 2021 squad, Pakistan’s head coach Misbah-ul-Haq and bowling coach Waqar Younis had stepped down from their respective roles. Just a few days after the duo stepped down from their role, the PCB has appointed Matthew Hayden and Vernon Philander’s to takeover their positions of Head Coach & bowling coach.
Misbah & Waqar were appointed in September 2019 and still had a year each left on their PCB contracts.
Misbah said that the need to stay away from his family during long tours and staying in strict bio-bubbles are the main reasons behind his decision to as to step down from his role of Head Coach. Waqar, on the other hand, decided to follow the head coach.
“Considering that I would have had to continue to spend considerable time away from my family in a bio-secure environment, I have decided to step down from the role”, said Misbah as quoted by the PCB.
“After Misbah shared with me his decision and future plans, it was a straightforward one for me to resign as we had walked into the roles together, had worked as a pair and now also step down together”, said Waqar Younis
