TNPL 2021: Fans reacts after Raina’s controversial statement made rounds on Social Media

TNPL 2021: Former India Cricketer Suresh Raina found himself surrounded by controversy after he stated that he embraces the culture in Chennai as he is “also a Brahmin”.

Suresh Raina who is an integral part of CSK in the IPL was asked to join the commentary box during the opening match of the TNPL 2021. During the clash, the commentator asked about Raina’s connection with Chennai & how he has embraced Chennai’s culture. In reply, Suresh Raina said, “I think I am also a Brahmin. I have been playing since 2004 in Chennai, I love the culture….I love my teammates. I have played with Anirudha Sri Kanth, Badri, Bala Bhai… I think you need to learn something good from there. We have a good administration, we have the license to explore ourselves. I love the culture there, & I am lucky to be a part of CSK. Hopefully, we will play more matches”.

Fans got angry at Raina’s casteist remark & they have taken it to Twitter to express their displeasure. A user on Twitter said that you have never experienced real Chennai culture despite playing for CSK for years. “@ImRaina you should be ashamed yourself. It seems that you have never experienced real Chennai culture though you have been playing many years for Chennai team,” the tweet read.

“So watched the video, I once liked Raina very much and now I am sad how ignorant or he has been hiding all these days.  Lost it! No more respect,” another one added.

Suresh Raina announced his retirement from International Cricket last year on August 15. He has been a vital cog of the CSK franchise in the IPL over the years as he is one of the highest run-scorer in the IPL. Suresh Raina has represented India in 18 Tests, 226 ODIs & 78 T20Is. He was also the first Indian to register a century across all three formats in International Cricket. The left-handed batsman will be next seen in action in the remainder of the IPL 2021 which will resume in the UAE from September 19.
