Townsville to host a Public Memorial for Andrew Symonds on Friday

Andrew Symonds life will be remembered & celebrated by former teammates with a no-jacket, no-tie memorial service in Townsville on Friday, almost two weeks after the death of Andrew Symonds in a car crash.

The all-rounder’s family confirmed on Monday that a public memorial will take place for the former Test & limited-overs star cricketer on Friday close to his home at Riverview Stadium in North Queensland. Ian Healy, Adam Gilchrist, Darren Lehmann, Jimmy Maher, and Matthew Mott will be among those to speak at the memorial, with poet and friend Rupert McCall also delivering a poem. The public memorial at the Riverview Stadium will be live-streamed at the Gabba, Symonds’ old home ground with Queensland.

The all-rounder’s family & friends will also gather for a collective private service on Friday morning before the memorial with a dress code of “definitely no jacket and tie required”. The details of the public memorial were released following a week of tributes for Symonds. Several former Queensland players have spent last week in the Bulls Masters charity and public speaking group, supporting each other after the shocking death of their teammate.

Even current Queensland players have spoken about their admiration for the gifted cricketer, who played 26 Tests and won two one-day World Cups. His public figure & legacy will be a point of discussion when players will assemble in Brisbane late this week ahead of next month’s tour of Pakistan.

A large number of fans have paid their tribute to Andrew Symonds who is one of the most successful cricketers in World Cricket in the early 21st century by leaving fishing rods and cricket balls at the front of their homes.

Former Australian all-rounder, Andrew Symonds who represented Australia in 26 Tests and 198 One-Day Internationals between 1998 and 2009, died in a car accident near his retirement home in Townsville. Symonds aged 46, died when his car left the road & rolled in Hervey Ranger near Townsville on May 14.
