Waqar Younis apologizes over “Namaz” remark post the India-Pakistan game

Former Pakistan speedster Waqar Younis has issued a public apology following his controversial remark on a national TV channel after India vs Pakistan game. The former Pakistan bowling coach had made a comment on Mohammad Rizwan offering “Namaz” during the India-Pakistan game on Sunday.

During his interaction with ARY Digital, the 49-year-old expressed that it was very special for him to watch Mohammad Rizwan offer Namaz in front of Hindus during the match. The incident took place during the drink’s break when Pakistan was chasing down 152 runs in the Super 12 clash of the ICC T20 World Cup.

However, his comments were perceived as objectionable by the fans from the cross-border in India. His comment also didn’t go down well among the Indian cricket fraternity and received backlash.

Former Indian batsman Wasim Jaffer played down Younis’s comment by deeming it as an act of shame. In his tweet, he stated “Absolutely vile and disgusting comments from Waqar Younis. #Shameful”

Indian cricket fraternity reacts:

Indian commentators Harsha Bhogle and Akash Chopra also expressed dissent over Waqar’s remarks. Harsha Bhogle even tweeted “For a person of Waqar Younis’ stature to say that watching Rizwan offering namaz in front of Hindus was very special to him, is one of the most disappointing things I have heard. A lot of us try hard to play such things down and talk up sport and to hear this is terrible,”

Waqar Younis soon realized his mistake as he took to his Twitter handle and apologized to the netizens. In his apology tweeted he stated: “In the heat of the moment, I said something which I did not mean which has hurt the sentiments of many. I apologise for this, this was not intended at all, genuine mistake. Sports unites people regardless of race, colour or religion. #apologies

It was the first time Pakistan defeated India in the ICC tournaments and ended India’s three-decade domination. India scored 151/7 in 20 overs and Pakistan chased down the total with 10 wickets in hand and 13 balls to spare.
