BBL 2021-2022: Tom Curran, Ben Manenti ruled out of the remaining tournament

BBL 2021-2022: Tom Curran Ben Manenti ruled out due to injuries

Sydney Sixers have been hit badly by the spate of injuries in the ongoing BBL 2021-2022. Recently its star player Tom Curran has been ruled out of the entire BBL season due to a back injury. Even Ben Manenti has been ruled out of the entire tournament after suffering a stress fracture. To add to the Sixers injury spate is the unavailability of Steve O’Keefe for a short period of time as he strained his calf after sealing a win over Melbourne Stars at MCG.

Tom Curran has returned with figures of six wickets in four matches during the ongoing BBL season. He was expected to play a crucial role in the pace attack in the upcoming fixtures of the franchise before he sustained an injury. Curran was the team’s leading wicket-taker in the 2019-2020 title-winning campaign as he contributed with both bat & ball in the middle order. However, he missed the last season of the Big Bash League due to quarantine rules & travel restrictions.

Manenti who suffered a neck stress fracture will undergo treatment in Hobart while Steve O’Keefe is unlikely to feature in their next fixture against Adelaide Strikers. He will return back to action in a due course of time.

Despite the unavialibity of their key players due to injuries, Captain Moises Henriques still believes that the team has a strong bench strength that can overcome these challenges.

“We pride ourselves on being a club and a team that embraces challenges but to lose players of the caliber of Tom and Ben, and to have SOK on the sidelines, would be a challenge for any team, and those guys aren’t simply replaced,” captain Moises Henriques said.

“On and off the field, all three of those guys play a massive role for us and their presence around the team and skills on the field will be missed by everybody in the group. But for us, we always look to have 18-match ready players in our squad and we see it as an opportunity for others within our group.”

Henriques also stressed that their fans & players need not panic with some of the players coming back. “We saw Ben Dwarshuis return from injury this week, Jackson Bird isn’t too far away and Sean Abbott is back after the birth of his daughter, so there is no need to panic,” he pointed out.

“There are guys like Lloyd Pope and Mickey Edwards who really deserve an opportunity, but due to the strength of our list haven’t been able to get as many chances as they deserve, so it will be a great little period for those guys to have a run of games.”

Sixers, who are on top of the table after three wins from four matches, “will explore injury replacement player options in coming days”.The Sixers have won three of their four matches and have accumulated 11 points so far in the ongoing BBL 2021-2022.
