LPL 2021 to be postponed to September, may clash with IPL 2021 Phase 2

LPL 2021 to be postponed to September

A piece of bad news for all the cricket fans who were waiting to witness thrilling cricketing action with the start of the Lanka Premier League. LPL 2021 which was set to begin from July 30 has been postponed to the end of August due to rising COVID-19 cases in Sri Lanka.

Adding to the complexity, one more cricket tournament will clash with the IPL 2021 Phase 2 as both the boards will try to complete the leagues before the start of the T20 World Cup. However, just like the scheduling of CPL 2021 is causing a problem for the IPL 2021 slated to be resumed from September, LPL 2021 postponement in September will not be a big issue for the BCCI. Because none of the Sri Lankan team is participating in the IPL 2021. Also, the overseas players who played in the LPL last year will not give Sri Lankan League preference over IPL.

LPL 2021 might struggle to get the participation of the top Cricketers

The West Indies players might opt for CPL which will begin from August 28 & thus LPL 2021 might struggle to get the participation of some of the top cricketers. Players like Andre Russell played for both LPL & IPL last year. But this time things are different, as Russell would be busy with CPL 2021 & will directly reach UAE to join the KKR team for the IPL 2021 happening in September. This clearly indicates that LPL itself will suffer a loss due to its postponement as Lankan Premier League organizers might find it difficult to get players’ participation in its 2nd edition.

The postponement of the LPL 2021 would also raise doubts over India’s tour to Sri Lanka which is scheduled to commence in July. The BCCI has confirmed that the Indian team will tour Sri Lanka in July for limited-overs series comprising of three ODIs & Three T20Is. According to the sources, the series will begin with the ODIS on July 13, 16, 19 followed by T20s on July 22, 24, 27. The Sri Lanka Cricket has confirmed that all six matches of the India tour will be played in Colombo.

The BCCI is yet to announce the Indian squad for the tour, but none of the Player who is currently on England tour will be included in the Indian tour of Sri Lanka.

India’s Predicted Playing XI for the Sri Lanka tour:

Shikhar Dhawan, Bhuvneshwar Kumar, Hardik Pandya, Yuzvendra Chahal, Sanju Samson, Prithvi Shaw, Deepak Chahar, Rahul Chahar, Jaydev Unadkat, Kuldeep Yadav, Varun Chakravarthy and Rahul Tewatia are some of the players who will be in the mix.
