Mohammed Nabi steps down as Afghanistan Captain

All-rounder Mohammad Nabi has stepped down as Afghanistan’s Captain following their four-run loss to Australia at Adelaide on Friday. Nabi took this major decision due to his disappointment with the team’s preparations for the T20 World Cup & disagreements with the selectors & management.

Notably, Afghanistan’s loss to Australia on Friday in Adelaide resulted in Afghanistan finishing the World Cup with three defeats & two no-results which made them the only team to leave the tournament without a win.

Announcing his decision on Twitter Nabi, he said, “Our T20 World Cup journey came to an end, with a result that neither us nor our supporters were expecting. We are as frustrated as you are with the outcome of matches.

“From the last year, our team preparation was not to a level that a captain would want or need for a big tournament. Moreover, in some of the last tours the team management, selection committee and I were not on the same page which had implications for the team balance.

“Therefore, with due respect, I announce to STEP DOWN as a CAPTAIN & will continue to play for my country when the management & team need me.

“I thank every single one of you from the bottom of my heart who came to the grounds despite matches being affected by the rain. I would also extend thanks to my supporters worldwide, your love truly means a lot to us. Long live Afghanistan.”  Nabi didn’t indicate anything about his retirement in the post-match presentation also his resignation was not discussed by Afghanistan’s head coach in the post-match press conference. So it’s clear that the former Afghanistan Captain would play for his country but not as a captain but as a common player.

A Glimpse of Captaincy Tenure of Mohammad Nabi

Mohammed Nabi took over the reins of captaincy after T20 World Cup 2021 following Rashid Khan’s dismissal. Nabi has previously handled the position back in 2010 replacing batter Nawroz Mangal.

During Nabi’s latest tenure Afghanistan has won 10 & lost 13 matches. Nabi has led Afghanistan in 28 ODIs & 35 T20Is amassing 1023 runs & scalping 47 wickets. It was during Nabi’s tenure that Afghanistan won their first game of the World Cup against Scotland in 2015. However, the last few months were not good for Mohammad Nabi & Co as they lost all the fixtures of the Super four stage in Asia Cup 2022 followed by the T20 World Cup’s Super12 stage. Though fortune is not with Nabi right now, he is the most capped player in Afghanistan & a popular name in the domestic leagues across the globe.
