Most Expensive Player in IPL 2023: Indian Premier league in every sense has grabbed the limelight right from its commencement back in 2008. And just like the main event, auctions too have never failed to leave cricket fans in awe. This time also the much-anticipated IPL 2023 auction turned out to be a record-breaking affair as franchisees left no stone unturned to grab the services of players whom they thought as a perfect fit for their line-up.
IPL 2023 auction was held in Kochi on 23rd December & the overseas players especially the all-rounders were the winners in the auction as franchisees didn’t shy of spending millions in order to grab the services of their desired players with the hope of clinching dream title.
England players were the biggest winners in the recently concluded IPL 2023 auction as three of them occupied a spot in the list of the top five most expensive player in IPL 2023. All 10 franchisees indulged in an intense bidding war but only a few of them could get their dream players by shedding huge amounts.
Let’s have a look at the top 5 most expensive player in the IPL 2023:-
1) Sam Curran bought by Punjab Kings for 18.5 Crore:
The Englishman was every ‘franchise dream player’ in the IPL 2023 as almost every team of the IPL entered the bidding war for acquiring the services of Sam Curran. But it was Punjab Kings who stand out of the crowd & grabbed the services of the most desirable pick in the IPL 2023 auction. Punjab Kings signed Sam Curran for a breaking amount of Rs 18.5 crore which made him the most expensive player bought in IPL 2023. With this Sam Curran also surpassed the record of Chris Morris who was bought for 16.25 crore by Rajasthan Royals back in IPL 2021 auctions to become the most expensive player in the history of IPL
The race for acquiring Sam Curran’s services began between Mumbai Indians & Royal Challengers Bangalore who entered the bidding war from his base price of 2 crores & quickly reached 7 crores. RCB walked out of the bidding war while RR entered the bidding battle. Both MI & RR were in a tussle for Curran. Soon CSK, LSG & PBKS the trio joined the bidding war raising Curran’s bid amount. But PBKS didn’t give up & finally sealed the deal at 18.5 crores to make Curran a part of the Punjab Kings family. Notably, Curran was also named the ‘Man of the tournament’ at the T20 World Cup 2022 after scalping 13 wickets in the tournament. He returned with match-winning figures of 3-12 in the T20 World Cup 2022 final which helped him to win the ‘Player of the Match’ Award.
2) Cameron Green acquired by Mumbai India for Rs 17.5 crores
Overseas players emerged with flying colors in the IPL 2023 auction & another foreign player who walked away with a whopping deal was Australian all-rounder Cameron Green. Australia’s star player was acquired by Mumbai Indians for 17.50 crore which made him the second most expensive player in IPL 2023 as well as in the history of IPL. The bidding for Green began at his base price of rs 2 crore between RCB & MI. Later Delhi Capitals joined the race & his amount surpassed 10 crores. MI & DC fought for the prolific player & his bidding price passed the 15 crore mark. DC withdrew from the race Mumbai Indians broke their bank to buy Cameron green’s services for 17.5 crores. In the past few months, Cameron Green’s spectacular performances grabbed the attention of IPL franchisees. He was a part of every franchisee to be acquired list but it was only Mumbai Indians who could actually grab his services.
3) Ben Stokes grabbed by CSK for Rs 16.25 Crore
The Bazball team’s recent success & its players stupendous performances raised their bids in the recently concluded IPL 2023 auction. And the leader of the Bazball team was no different as he became the third most expensive player in the IPL 2023 auction. Yes, Ben Stokes who along with Brendon McCullum led to the beginning of the Bazball era in the England Cricket team was picked up for 16.25 crores by the CSK team. With Ben Stokes in their line-up their captaincy issue after Dhoni’s retirement now gets solved. Stokes was on the radar of all 10 franchisees & it was an obvious thing as under his leadership England brought an aggressive approach in the longest format of cricket which worked in their favor. Not only in Test format but in the shortest format of Cricket too England proved its mettle by winning T20 World Cup 2022.
In all these historic wins Ben Stokes played an integral role which made him the most wanted player on the franchisees’ list. Ben Stokes entered the auction at his base price of Rs 2 crore. RCB & RR initially competed for the swashbuckling all-rounder & later LSG joined the race to raise the bid value to Rs 7 crore. SRH too entered the bidding process followed by CSK. It seemed like the ‘Yellove Army’ had already made up their mind of making Stokes part of the yellow army as they fought with SRH fearlessly & grabbed his services for Rs 16.25 crore. With this Stokes became the third most expensive player in the history of IPL.
4) Nicholas Pooran bought by Lucknow Super Giants for 16 crores
Never did anyone think that a wicket-keeper batter could grab such a cracking deal in the IPL auction. But Nicholas Pooran did the unexpected as he grabbed a jaw-dropping deal from Lucknow Supergiants which made him the most expensive wicketkeeper batter in the history of IPL. LSG grabbed the services of Nicholas Pooran for a whopping 16 crores.
CSK began the bidding war for Pooran at 2 crores, RR & Capitals then joined the bidding war & were going fiery for getting the services of prolific Nicholas Pooran. SRH & RR raised Pooran’s value to Rs 7.25 crores & eventually, his price surpassed 10 crores. Capitals & Giants both pushed the bars & raised his price by over 15 crores. However, LSG hit the final nail in the coffin by buying Nicholas Pooran’s service for a whopping 16 crores while Capitals opted out of the race after his price surpassed 15 crores. LSG cracked the deal & made Nicholas Pooran fourth most expensive player in the IPL 2023 auction.
5) Harry Brook was bought by SRH for Rs 13.25 crore
There came another Englishman who grabbed an exciting deal from one of the IPL teams. We are talking about Harry Brook who got a jaw-dropping deal from SRH as he was picked by the Hyderabad franchise for a huge 13.25 crore which is nearly nine times more than his base price of Rs 1.5 crore.
For Harry Brook, a bidding war was going on between RCB & RR & then entered SRH entered the race. SRH & RR kept bidding high for Harry Brook, as a result, his price surpassed 13 crores. At this point, RR was forced to leave the bidding process as they had just 13.2 crores in their kitty. SRH easily grabbed Harry Brook for 13.25 crore making him the fifth most expensive player in IPL 2023.
