Mumbai Indians signs Mark Boucher as their New Head Coach

The mystery about Mark Boucher’s next coaching stint has finally ended with Mumbai Indians announcing him as their New Head Coach. South African team’s Head Coach, Mark Boucher will begin his stint with Mumbai Indians from the IPL 2023.

Earlier a day prior, Cricketflicker reported that Mark Boucher will end his coaching stint with the South African team after the conclusion of the T20 World Cup 2022 & is currently in the final stage of negotiations with an IPL franchise to take up the role. The vacancy for Head Coach with Mumbai Indians team opened up after Mahela Jayawardene was elevated to a more global role within the Mumbai Indians group, which now has teams at the IPL, the SA20 league, and the UAE’s ILT20.

Mahela Jayawardene & Zaheer Khan takes up Global roles with Mumbai Indians Franchise

Jayawardene who was earlier the head coach at the Mumbai Indians since 2017 has been elevated to the Global head of Performance and Zaheer Khan, the director of cricket operations till last season, is now the global head of cricket for the Mumbai Indians family. Notably, under Jayawardene’s coaching stint Mumbai Indians made it to the IPL playoffs in three out of six seasons & lifted a trophy each time.

While Zaheer joined the franchise later in 2018 & since then in 91 matches they have played, Mumbai Indians’ win-loss ratio of 1.289 has been the best among the original eight IPL teams. However, the franchise struggled for form in the last two seasons with Mumbai Indians ending the IPL 2022 at the bottom of the Points table.

“Their history and achievements as a franchise clearly put them up there as one of the most successful sporting franchises in all of world sport,” Boucher said of Mumbai Indians in a franchise statement.

“I look forward to the challenge and respect the need for results. It’s a strong unit with great leadership and players. I look forward to adding value to this dynamic unit.”

After England’s loss in the Test series against South Africa, Mark Boucher announced his decision of stepping down from the position after the T20 World Cup in Australia. Though Boucher didn’t have an experience as a Head Coach in T20 leagues, he had served as KKR’s wicket-keeping coach in IPL 2016. Prior to that, he had also played for Knight Riders as well as Royal Challengers Bangalore. After enjoying successful stints in the IPL, Boucher moved to take up the role of Head Coach at Titans in South Africa’s domestic arena, moving up to take up the role with the National team in 2019.
