"Muttiah Muralitharan has shown variety in his bowling", praised Mahela Jayawardene!

Shane Warne & Muttiah Muralitharan are regarded as two of the best spinners in the cricket fraternity. Former Sri Lanka Captain Mahela Jayawardene on Tuesday said that Murali Jayawardene believes in sending the batsman back in pavilion.

“Murali was a champion bowler, he went about his game differently to others. Warne did not have the variety that Murali did. Murali knew what he was doing and believed in grinding a batsman down. If he had to wait for ten overs to get a batsman out, he will do that,” Jayawardene told Sanjay Manjrekar in a videocast hosted by a media portal.

“Warne and Murali are two different personalities, Warne is a steady leg-spinner but he probably played much more with the tactical honors. He used  a you come and attack me, I will get you out, approach he probably knew that he did not have the variety that Murali had,” he added. Muralitharan played 133 Test matches in his career & took a whopping 800 wickets.

He is the highest wicket taker in the history of Test Cricket & is followed by Australia’s Shane Warne who took 708 wickets & Anil Kumble who took 619 wickets. Muralitharan also played 350 ODIs & 12 T20Is in his career & picked 534 & 13 wickets respectively.

During a recent interaction with Sanjay Manjrekar, Jayawardene has discussed about the batting lineups & said that the batting lineups are very good these days & bowling lineups have a tough job to match the batting lineups.

“Whether modern-day bowlers will surpass the records that their predecessors did, is a wait & watch thing for us. The present bowlers are probably up against better batting units. If they even do not achieve the records as their predecessors, it does not mean they are bad bowlers,” Jayawardene said.

The former batsman Jayawardene played 149 Tests, 448 ODIs & 55 T20Is for Sri Lanka. Jayawardene wrote his name in golden words in the Cricket History with his unbeatable record. He scored 25,957 runs across all formats of cricket.
