New Zealand Cricket Board handed Women’s Central Contracts to 17 Players for the 2021-2022 season. Fast bowler Lea Tahuhu is the notable absentee from New Zealand Women’s Central Contract list while six new players earned maiden deals. Confirmation of Tahuhu’s omission from the 17 names came the day after her wife Amy Satterthwaite announced her retirement from international cricket when she was told she would not be handed a new contract.
Frankie Mackay, Leigh Kasperek, and Thamsyn Newton along with retired Katey Martin are the other players who have been denied Women’s central contracts for the 2021-2022 season. The players who received central contracts for the first time comprise Auckland Hearts trio Fran Jonas, Molly Penfold, Izzy Gaze, offspinners Nensi Patel (Northern Brave), and Eden Carson (Otago Sparks), and Wellington Blaze batter, Georgia Plimmer.
The omission of prolific pacer Lea Tahuhu from the new Central Contracts list is shocking considering the amount of balance she brings to the attack with her pace. She was New Zealand’s joint-leading wicket-taker at this year’s ODI World Cup – alongside Mackay – with 10 wickets in her kitty.
NZC’s General Manager of High Performance, Byran Stronach emphasized that at times there had been tough to make but also said that a player can still be selected from outside the contracted group.
“They have given their all; have made great sacrifices, and retain our absolute respect,” he said. “It’s also important to emphasize that, just because someone hasn’t received a national contract offer, it doesn’t mean they cannot, or will not, be selected.
“This is about having on contract the players we’re most likely to use during the next 12-month period.”
Talking about new players who received their maiden contracts, young left-arm spinner Jonas has played five ODIs & was also a part of this year’s World Cup squad while pace bowler Penfold had featured in two ODIs. Plimmer was a late call-up to the World Cup after Lauren Down was ruled out through injury. Gaze & Jess McFadyen are two potential candidates to take over Martin’s role behind the stumps.
“It’s never easy coming up with a final 17 players,” Stronach said. “Having said that, we’re excited about the six new faces receiving contract offers, several of whom already have some White Ferns experience under their belt.
“To be in a position in which we’re genuinely considering the credentials of a wider pool of players can only be viewed as a positive for the women’s game.”
All the players who received central contracts have time until June 3 to either accept or decline their contract offers.
