New Zealand Cricket releases Martin Guptill from Central Contract

There comes breaking news right from the house of New Zealand Cricket. The veteran opener Martin Guptill has been released from New Zealand Central Contract with immediate effect on Wednesday. Notably, the prolific cricketer has made the request to be released from his central contract in order to pursue playing opportunities elsewhere.

“Following discussions with NZC, it was agreed Guptill’s request for a release should be accepted, effective immediately,” NZC announced in a release. “For its part, NZC has made it clear to him that, while he would remain eligible for selection, preference would continue to be given to those players with central or domestic contracts.”

Notably, Martin Guptill has been an integral part of New Zealand’s white-ball squads for the last 14 years. However, he didn’t get the chance to play in the T20 World Cup 2022 as the team chose Finn Allen over him. Guptill was not even named for New Zealand’s ongoing T20 & ODI series against India. These factors might have forced Guptill to take the major step of opting out of New Zealand’s Central Contract.

Guptill has been the highest run-scorer for New Zealand in T20Is & third highest run-getter in ODIs. He has amassed 3,532 runs in 122 T20Is at an average of 31.81 with two tons & 20 fifties on his name. Further Guptill has also left a mark in the ODI format by scoring 7,346 runs at an average of 41.73 in 195 innings. He has 18 ODI tons & 39 half-centuries on his name with the highest score of 237 runs. In Test format, he has amassed 47 Tests scoring 2,586 runs at an average of 29.38 with 17 half-centuries & highest score of 189 runs.

Further Martin Guptill has clarified that he is not retiring from cricket & still wishes to be considered for selection by New Zealand Cricket when he is available. This is the third instance of New Zealand’s player asking for a release. Earlier, Boult & Grandhomme & opted out of New Zealand Central Contract.

“Playing for my country has been a massive honor, and I’m grateful to everyone within the BLACKCAPS and NZC for their support,” Guptill said. “But, equally, I’m realistic enough to understand the need to consider my options in the current circumstances.

“With this release, I’m still available for New Zealand, I have the chance to explore other opportunities, and I also get to spend more time with my family – which is important.”

On the other hand, New Zealand Cricket has extended its good wishes to Martin. They also cleared that Martin would remain eligible for selection however they will give more preference to the players who possess central or domestic contracts. The board also said that a replacement for Guptill would be named soon.
