Ashes 2021-2022, 3rd test: Boland’s 6 wicket haul guided Australia to a stunning series win

Ashes 2021-2022, 3rd test: England’s hopes of retaining the Ashes series went in vain as Australia defeated England at the MCG with an innings & 14 runs within two days & a session in the Boxing Day Test. Australia displayed great grit & determination to take an unassailable 3-0 lead in the Ashes series

The day belonged to Australia’s debutant Scott Boland who scalped six wickets right at his debut in his home ground. Boland also become the third bowler to register a five-wicket haul in the history of test cricket as he dismissed top five England batsmen in just 19 balls before he wrapped up Australia’s innings at 68 to register an innings & 14 runs win in the third Test of the Ashes 2021-2022 series. Scott Boland also created a new record for conceding less number of runs (7) while picking up a 5 wicket haul on test debut surpassing Australia’s Charles Turner who picked up a 5-wicket haul for 15 runs against England in 1887. Scott Boland had a dream spell right on his debut as he finished with figures of 7/55 & went on to win the Mullagh Medal on his debut in Melbourne.

England began day three of the third Ashes test at 31/4 with Joe Root & ben Stokes taking the charge to revive their innings. However, Mitchell Starc slaughtered those hopes by removing Ben Stokes for 11 runs in the 18th over before Boland began his riot of five-wicket haul. Boland had Jonny Bairstow lbw for five, Root out for 28, and tailenders Mark Wood and Ollie Robinson each out for ducks. All-rounder Cameron Green dismissed James Anderson for two runs to mount pressure on the reeling three lions squad.

Meanwhile, England Captain who ended 2021 as the leading run-scorer in test format by scoring 1708, was the final nail in the coffin for England. It was disappointing to see England succumbed in the second innings after getting bowled for 68 runs. Their pace bowlers did all the hard work to restrict Australia to 267 runs after the tourists were all-out for 185 in their first innings. James Anderson displayed their best performance by scalping four wickets on Day 2 but eventually, England’s batters failed to capitalize on bowlers’ stunning performance as they were left reeling at 31/4 at stumps on Day 2. Now Australia & England will come into a face-off in the 4th test of the Ashes 2021-2022 series in Sydney from January 3.
