Cheteshwar Pujara survives the fiery bowling attack from the Australian pace bowlers which became the highlight of the fifth day of the fourth test at the Gabba. While he registered his slowest ever half century on Tuesday it played a vital role in allowing Shubman Gill, Ajinkya Rahane & Rishabh Pant play freely.
Always criticized for his slow approach towards reaching the target, Pujara batted like a true warrior. He took blows to his body, finger & head but did not give up & continued to bat with full might to chase the target. He stood tall, defending the Australia bowlers who looked for just one chance to break into the Indian lower order.
While taking India close to the victory on Tuesday, Pujara hit his 28th Test half century & third fifty plus score in the series. The right handed batsman cherished the memorable victory & said the moments like these makes the long hours of practice truly worth it.
“Overcome with emotion and filled with pride. The character & skill shown by the entire squad has been commendable. Moments like these make the countless hours of toil and practice truly worth it. Thank you for all the support and wishes,” Pujara tweeted.
Pujara played a truly gritty innings holding one slot up for first Gill & then Pant hit the fifties to help India hail historic victory. Even coach Ravi Shastri backed Pujara and squashed any debates that had erupted after the batsman’s slow approach in the game.
“We are not interested in any debates,” said Shastri in the virtual press conference.
India defeated Australia by three wickets overcoming all the obstacles in the final test of the series at the Gabba on Tuesday to take series at 2-1 score. The last time a touring team won at the Brisbane Cricket Ground was in the year 1988 when mighty West Indies team under the leadership of Viv Richards thrashed Allan Border’s team by 9 wickets. What makes India’s victory more commendable is how the injury hit Indian team fought with all the odds & even mental fatigue due to the bio-bubble restrictions to register a historic victory. India’s memorable win has also ensured that India overtake Australia in the ICC Test Team Rankings to claim second spot.
