CPL 2021: Guyana Amazon warriors register a nine run victory over Trinbago Knight Riders in Season’s Opening Clash

Guyana Amazon Warriors started CPL 2021 with a bang by registering a nine-run victory over Defending Champions Trinbago Knight Riders.

Amazon Warriors began their innings on a winning note with Chandrapaul Hemraj hitting two sixes but soon he was caught once Sunil Narine entered the attack. The Guyana Amazon warriors surprised everyone by sending Odean Smith to bat at number three to maximize run-scoring in the powerplay overs.

However, Odean Smith justified his promotion by scoring 24 runs off 15 balls but once he got dismissed the Warriors lost momentum as they were left reeling at 57/3. Early dismissal of Shoaib Malik by Isuru Udana & Mohammed Hafeez by Akeal Hosein sent Guyana Warriors on a back foot.

Captain Nicholas Pooran came to bat at number seven with just five overs remaining for their innings to end and Nicholas along with Shimron Hetmyer tried to pile up runs for Guyana Amazon Warriors. However, Nicholas fell to a stunning Darren Bravo in-out-in catch at the boundary. Hetmyer had anchored the Warriors innings & hit some good shots in the death overs to score his first CPL half-century & helped Guayana to end on a decent total to chase. Despite losing the crucial wickets of Lendl Simmons & Clin Munro in the powerplay the Knight Riders were ahead in the game at the end of 6 overs.

A twist came in the gameplay with the introduction of Imran Tahir who ran through Trinbago’s batting order by removing Sunil Narine & Bravo in quick succession & then Guyana continued to scalp wickets at regular intervals. Odean Smith helped to balance the game when he dismissed TimSeifert to leave the Knight riders struggling on 78/5 after 12 overs. Trinbago’s gameplay became worse when Romario Shepherds dismissed Kieron pollard for two runs. all the winning hopes of Defending champions became zero when Dinesh Ramdin fell to a smart catch from Shoaib Malik.

Brief Scores:

Guyana Amazon Warriors 142/7 (Hetmyer 54, Odean Smith, Narine 2-17) vs Trinbago Knight Riders 133/9 (Dinesh Ramdin 28, Romario Shepherd 3-15)
