Cricket Tasmania Chairman slams Cricket Australia for ill treating Paine

Cricket Tasmania Chariman slams Cricket Australia for their ill treatment of Paine

Andrew Gaggin, Chairman of Cricket Tasmania lashed out at Cricket Australia for their ill-treatment of former Test Captain Tim Paine calling it “appalling” & “the worst in many years.

In light of Tim Paine’s decision to step down from captaincy after an off-field scandal emerged, CA Chairman Richard Freudenstein & CEO Nick Hockley said that they would not have allowed Paine to continue in a leadership capacity which he had been in charge since 2018.

Cricket Australia’s integrity unit had cleared Tim Paine despite the talismanic batsman had exchanged explicit text messages with a co-worker at Cricket. It was determined that there was no breach of any code as the messages exchanged were consensual and private.

Coming out in support of Tim Paine, Gaggin said, “Tim Paine has been a beacon for Australian cricket over the past four years and instrumental in salvaging the reputation of the national team after the calamity of Cape Town. Yet, at a time when CA should have supported Tim, he was evidently regarded as dispensable. The treatment afforded to the Australian Test captain by CA has been appalling, and the worst since Bill Lawry 50 years ago.

“The Cricket Tasmania Board reaffirmed its view that Paine should not have been put in a position where he felt the need to resign over an incident that was determined by an independent inquiry at the time to not be a breach of the Code of Conduct and was a consensual and private exchange that occurred between two mature adults and was not repeated.”

Earlier Former CA Chairman David Peever had accused the current CA government of abandoning Paine despite he has been cleared from the charges of any misocnduct in 2018. “I’m disappointed to see a current chairman publicly criticising decisions of a previous board, several members of whom are still on the board and were part of the 2018 decision.

“Tim has been an incredible servant of the game and took over the leadership of the national team in the most difficult of circumstances. He has led with distinction for more than three years. He deserves Cricket Australia’s loyalty and not to be abandoned at this time,” Peever had said.

Bailey will not participate in the voting process for Tim Paine Selection to test team

George Bailey, the national selector said if Tim Paine’s selection to test team will be determined by voting process then he will not participate in it. Apart from being former team-mates at Tasmania and Australia, Bailey and Paine are also involved in a gym business in Hobart.

Bailey’s decision means it will leave the voting to Justin Langer and Tony Dodemaide, should it come to that.

“If the panel was not in agreeance on Tim’s position going forward, and it was going to come down to a vote, then I would step aside and leave that to Tony and Justin to work through. They’re both aware of that,” Bailey told the Cricket Etc podcast.
