ENG vs SL: Sri Lanka’s batsman Avishka Fernando has been ruled out of the upcoming three-match ODI series against England due to two tears in his quadriceps. Fernando suffered the injury while doing fielding in the second T20I of the three-match T20I series against England & thus he has not been featured in the third & the final T20I.

“Avishka Fernando has sustained an injury to his right quadriceps (Grade two tear). Fernando suffered injury in his right quadricep while fielding during the 2nd T20I against England at Cardiff”, tweeted the Official twitter handle of Sri-Lanka Cricket.

This injury comes as a major setback for Fernando as this had been his first tour with the National team since the start of the COVID-19. Earlier this year, Fernando had also missed the West Indies & Bangladesh limited overs tours as he had failed in fitness tests.

Fernando would have been Sri Lanka’s first choice in the Playing XI. But there are several batsmen in Sri lanka’s squad who are well capable of playing in the top three spot in the national team. Danushka Gunathilaka, Kusal Perera, Kusal Mendis, Oshada Fernando and Pathum Nissanka are one of the best batsmen of Sri Lanka squad & in the past they have batted in top three. Fernando’s absence didn’t affect Sri Lanka’s performance in the already daunting T20I series against England.

Sri Lanka lost  the three match T20I series against England that concluded on Saturday. Sri Lanka failed miserably to win even a single match of the T20I series. And thus England recorded a series sweep against Sri Lanka. England & Sri Lanka will now face each other in a three-match ODI series starting on Tuesday at Chester’Le-Street. Sri Lanka is ranked ninth in the ODIs rankings while England occupies fourth spot on the Rankings list. Sri Lanka has lost six out of eight ODIs being played against England.
