ENG vs SL: Jos Buttler ruled out of the ongoing series due to calf injury

Jos Buttler

ENG vs SL: England’s squad suffered a massive blow with wicket-keeper Jos Buttler being ruled out of the remaining T20Is & ODIs against Sri Lanka after suffering a calf injury.

Jos Buttler who scored 68 runs off 55 balls to guide England towards a comfy win in the first T20I against Sri Lanka, has sustained a calf injury during the match. Thus Buttler has been ruled out of the remaining matches of the series & Dawid Malan is included in the squad as Buttler’s replacement.

“Jos Buttler sustained a right calf injury in England’s first IT20 victory at Sophia Gardens on Wednesday. He underwent an MRI scan in Cardiff on Thursday morning, which revealed a small tear. Buttler felt tightness and discomfort at the end of the game after a match-winning 68 not out secured an eight-wicket win. He will return home today and commence his rehabilitation program,” the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) said in a statement on Friday.

After the conclusion of the limited-overs series against Sri Lanka, England will host Pakistan for a three-match ODI & three-match T20I series starting from July 8. Buttler will be looking forward to returning till the start of the limited-overs series against Pakistan, followed by a five-match test series against India at home. So if not till the Pakistan series, Buttler will aim at completing his rehabilitation & returning for the test series. Currently, the World’s No 1 ranked T20I batsman Dawid Malan has replaced Buttler in the squad.

Jonny Bairstow & Sam billings are the two options with England to do wicket-keeping in Saturday’s match. Sam Billings to get a maiden call-up for the ODI series in the middle order. “In terms of ODIs, I had a really good summer last year and averaged 83 in that format so I would be pretty disappointed if I didn’t get a gig but this team is a very hard one to get into,” Billings said.

Earlier Jos Buttler confirmed that he will not feature for IPL 2021 Phase 2 as it will clash with England’s Pakistan & Bangladesh tour in the September-October window. “Usually the IPL does not clash with any international cricket. When it does clash, probably England will take precedence,” BBC quoted Buttler as saying.
