Government has given Green Signal for staging IPL 2020 in UAE!

The IPL Governing Council on Sunday took a big decision of retaining all its sponsors which included Chinese mobile company VIVO & approved COVID-19 substitutions in the event to be held in UAE this year.

The tournament will be played from September 19 to November 10 at three different venues in the UAE Dubai, Sharjah & Abu Dhabi which is subjected to Government approval that is expected in next couple of days. “The 53-day tournament will witness 10-afternoon matches starting at 15:30 IST while the evening matches will start at 19:30 IST,” stated an Official statement from the BCCI.

“Standard Operating Procedure (SOP) is still being prepared but there would be any number of COVID replacements this year,” a BCCI official told media. A big issue of Chinese Sponsorship of the IPL was settled on Sunday in the Council meet. It became a center of attraction after violent clashes between the Indian & Chinese troops in eastern Ladakh in June.

“All I can say is that all our sponsors are with us. Hopefully you can read between the lines,” an IPL member told media on conditions of anonymity after Sunday’s meeting.

The IPL Title sponsor VIVO pays the BCCI around Rs 440 crore per year in a five-year deal that ends in 2022. It would be a difficult task for the Board to get new sponsors at a short notice due to the current Pandemic situation which has resulted in financial crisis.  An epic decision on Women’s IPL was also taken in the IPL Governing Council Meet. The Board has approved Women’s IPL after taking BCCI President Sourav Ganguly’s approval on Sunday.

“Women’s T20 Challenge will also take place in the UAE and will comprise three teams with four matches to be played during the IPL Playoff week,” stated the Board’s press release.

The IPL 2020 was forcefully staged out of India due to the rising coronavirus cases & now the Board has allowed unlimited COVID-19 replacements considering the delicate health safety issues across the world.

“The final will be played on November 10 as it enters the Diwali week making it lucrative for the broadcasters,” the IPL GC member said. It is also expected that the squad strength in terms of playing members will be 24 for the eight franchises.

The BCCI is having discussions with the Tata Group for creating a bio-bubble secure environment. BCCI has also received many presentations from a Dubai Based group on creating medical facility in the UAE.
