IND vs NZ 1st Test, Day 5: The Black Caps proved why they are known as one of the World’s best teams as they showed gutsy performance on the last day of the first test to register a hard-fought draw. The lower order of New Zealand’s batting order displayed determination & ensured that visitors walked away with a draw at Green Park, Kanpur on Monday.
Team India managed to fetch eight wickets on day 5 of the first test but a stellar performance from New Zealand’s batters helped them to snatch victory from the jaws of hosts. Ravindra Jadeja scalped four wickets in the second innings while Ravichandran Ashwin returned with three wickets to keep India going into the first test.
Resuming the final session of Day 5 at 125/4 the Indian bowlers clawed further deep as Axar Patel removed Henry Nicholls by LBW. After five overs, Ravindra Jadeja scalped the prized wicket of Kane Williamson. The New Zealand captain decided to hit back & the ball skidded on to trap him plumb in front. Williamson departed for 24 off 112. In the 79th over, India got another breakthrough as Tom Blundell was bowled by Ashwin. India took the second ball in the 84th overs as the match reached its ending point. With the day coming to an end & time running out for the hosts, Ravindra Jadeja Struck twice to’ send Kyle Jamieson & Tim Southee back to the pavilion.
One wicket away from a stunning win, India’s bowlers Rachin Ravindra & Ajaz Patel used their every tactic to register the desirable win. But Rachin who played 91 balls in the second innings ensured that his team walked away with a hard-fought draw.
Team India managed to scalp three wickets in the secodn session on Day 5. At the tea break, the black Caps score read 125/4. Will Somerville 36 was sent back to the pavilion by Umesh Yadav in the 36th over of the innings & this brought Kane Williamson in the middle of an attack.
Tom Latham marched ahead & brought up his half-century in the 51st over of the innings. However soon Latham (52) was dismissed by Ravichandran Ashwin in the 55th over & with Latham’s prized wicket, the off-spinner surpassed Harbhajan’s tally of 417 test wickets. Ravindra Jadeja then picked the wickets of Ross Taylor and Kane Williamson to leave New Zealand reeling at 128 for 6.
Earlier on day 1 of the IND vs NZ 1st test, India won the toss & opted to bat first. Riding on the back of a sensational ton from Shreyas Iyer, India registered 345 runs total in the first innings. New Zeaalnd in reply were bounded out for 296 runs. The Blackcaps scalped early wickets in India’s secodn innings but thanks to India’s valuable contributions from Shreyas Iyer (65), Ashwin (32), and Axar Patel (61) helped India post 234 runs in their second innings.
