IND W vs ENG W 1st T20I: Natalie Sciver & Amy Jones blistering 55 & 43 runs knock helped England to defeat India in a rain-affected first T20I on Friday in Northampton.
England brought up a decent total of 177 runs in 20 overs & then restricted India to a diminished 54/3 in 8.4 overs before rain played a spoilsport. Since the DLS score at that point was 71, India lost the match by narrow 18 runs as no game was possible further due to rains. With this spectacular victory, England took a 1-0 lead in the T20I series.
Chasing a target of 177 runs, India got off to a poor start as Katherine Brunt removed Shafai Verma in the first over. Smiriti Mandhana & Harleen Deol then stitched a brief 44 runs stand to bring India back on track in the game, However, Sciver removed Mandhana on the last ball of the powerplay as India’s opener was caught at deep backward square trying to hit a six. Mandhana has scored 29 runs off 17 balls.
In the very next over Sarah Glenn dismissed India Captain Harmanpreet Kaur to end India’s chances to chase the target. With the fall of Harmanpreet’s wicket, India was reduced to 47/3 in just seven overs. Rain stopped the game in the ninth over when India was 54 for 3. Since the visitors were behind the DLS equation, England won the first T20I as no further play was possible due to the continuous drizzle in Northampton.
For visitors, Shikha Pandey scalped three wickets in the second last over to give India some relief. However, England bowlers scalped some quick wickets to leave India struggling in the chase of 177 runs. In the 19th over, Harleen Deol pulled off a stunning catch to dismiss Amy Jones & won the hearts of millions of fans. Jones whacked the ball towards wide long-off & Harleen produced a remarkable effort to dismiss Amy Jones along with saving a six. Though India lost the first T20I, Harleen’s out worldly catch became the limelight of the first T20I fixture.
