India overcame all the odds to emerge victorious against Australia in Brisbane on Tuesday to seal a 2-1 series win. With most of the players ruled out of the team due to an injury the series saw various youngsters & new comers made their Test debuts.
India’s bowling attack in the 4th Test at the Gabba was led by Mohammed Siraj who had played all of two tests leading up to the fourth match, after making his debut in Melbourne in the previous match. Navdeep Saini debuted in Sydney & played in a single game. Shardul Thakur had played in one test in 2018 but had bowled only 10 deliveries in that particular match before suffering from an injury. T Natarajan & Washington Sundar were making their debuts in the series decider match.
For all these new comers the series was just like dream come true after years of hard work which finally paid off. This series also pushed them to overcome extreme hardships to finally make their mark at the very top spot of the game they play. All these new comers came from a middle class background after facing lot of struggle & hardships right from early stage in their life.
Mohammed Siraj’s father was a rickshaw driver & India’s new bowler faced lot of struggle from the early stage of his life. Just days before the test series, Siraj’s father died. Bue due to the coronavirus enforced quarantine rules & regulations he could not return back to India, Instead he choose to stay in Australia & live his late father’s dream of playing Test Cricket for India. T Natarajan’s father was a daily wage earner & his mother sells chicken on roadside which she refused to give up despute of Natarajan’s best efforts to convince her. But the Yorker specialist stand out in the local circles before rising to prominent position in the last season of the IPL & then getting a dream call up to the national team for the Australia Tour.
Navdeep Saini is not different than Natarajan & Siraj. He also comes from a middle class family & was born to a government driver in Haryana but he moved to Delhi to get a chance to play cricket. There was controversy over his selection for Delhi team but he shut down all the critics by finishing as a highest wicket taker in 2018.
Shardul Thakur was staying in Palghar & used to travel almost 90 kms from Palghar to Mumbai to play cricket & also battled weight problem to push his way to the top spot in the team. Most of these new players were not expected to make their way in the playing XI but forced into the deep end as they rise up from their struggles to help the team win one of the most historic series ever.
