Riding on the back of AB De Villiers stunning performance with bat & Harshal Patel’s solid bowling stint, RCB beats Mumbai Indians by two wickets in the IPL 2021 season-opening match at MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai.

Harshal Patel scalped five wickets to limit Mumbai Indians to 159 runs in 20 overs. In response to Mumbai Indians 160 runs, RCB chased the target on the last ball of their innings. Thanks to the power-pack hitting by De Villiers in the death overs. RCB required 39 runs off the last four overs & De Villiers ensured that RCB always remains in the game. De Villiers with his power-hitting bought the RCB equation to seven runs required of one over. However, AB De Villiers was run out in the last over while trying to score two runs.

AB De Villiers dismissal didn’t make much difference, as Harshal & Mohammed Siraj took RCB over the line on the last ball of the 20th over. Chasing a Mammoth target of 160 runs, RCB got off to an outstanding start. Openers Washington Sundar & Kohli scored 35 runs in the first four overs. However, Washington’s stint ended soon as Krunal Pandya dismissed him in the fifth over. In the very next ball, Boult removed debutant Rajat Patidar to reduce RCB to 46/2 in the powerplay.

Kohli took a break from big-hitting & slowed down in the middle overs. However, Glenn Maxwell continued his form by hitting two maximums of three boundaries. Bumrah caught Kohli in front of the stumps. With Kohli’s dismissal, RCB’s middle batting order collapsed as they lost two big wickets in the 15th over.

Mumbai Indians tried to return back to track by scalping the big wicket of Glenn Maxwell. Mumbai Indians tried to change the momentum of the game in their favour by sending Shahbaz Ahmed back to the pavilion. Daniel Christian also failed to make a difference as RCB lost the sixth wicket in quick succession. But AB de Villiers hit some glorious shots to reduce the equation from 39 runs off 24 balls, to 19 runs off two overs. RCB suffered a minor shock as Kyle Jamieson & De Villiers got out in the last two overs. However, RCB managed to chase the total in the 20th over.

Earlier Mumbai Indians were sent to bat first. Mumbai Indians got off to a good & stable start with Rohit Sharma & Chris Lynn scoring boundaries on regular intervals. However, the blooming partnership between Rohit & Lynn was ended with Rohit getting run out for 19 runs in the fourth over. Suryakumar Yadav then came on the field & along with Chris Lynn steadied MI’s innings. The duo took the total to 86/1 after the end of 10 overs.

However, in the 11th over, Jamieson put an end to their strong 70 runs partnership by dismissing Suryakumar Yadav for 31 runs. Soon after that Sundar bowled Chris Lynn who missed his half-century just by one run.

Ishan Kishan & Hardik Pandya then came out to bat & steady MI’s ship. However, they also failed to stitch a strong partnership as Hardik walked back to the pavilion in the 16th over. Then Pollard came to bat on the field.

RCB bowlers continued their restricted bowling & didn’t allow the Mumbai Indians batters to settle down on the field. Ishan Kishan was also dismissed on 18th over by Harshal Patel. Krunal Pandya & Pollard together took Mumbai Indians over 150 runs mark in the 19th over.

Harshal Patel bowled the final over of the innings & removed Krunal & Pollard on the first two balls of the 20th over. Harshal then continued his wicket-taking spell by removing Marco Jansen from the field. The last player of the Mumbai Indians squad Jasprit Bumrah got run out on the final delivery of the innings. After displaying an outstanding bowling stint RCB’s heroics with the bat helped them to clinch victory against Mumbai Indians in the IPL 2021 opening match.
