IRE W vs SA W: Gaby Lewis shines as Ireland registers a 10-run win in the first T20I

IRE W vs SA W: Gaby Lewis’s blistering 52-run knock took Ireland to a 10-run win over South Africa Women in the first T20I of the three-match T20I series here at Pembroke Cricket Club on Friday.

Lewis smashed 52 runs off 38 balls whereas Paul scored 47 off 42 balls to guide Ireland to a defendable total of 143-7. Her heroics with the bat was capitalized by Kelly’s stellar bowling performance who scalped two wickets while Rachel Delaney, Cara Murray & Leah paul took one wicket each.

The match unfolded with South Africa winning the toss & opting to bowl first. South Africa displayed brilliant fielding skills as Tumi Sekhukhune fetched three wikcets while Nadine de Klerk, Tryon & Luus took one wicket each to restrict Ireland at 143-7.

Chasing 144, South Africa got off to a bad start as they lost their opener, Lara Goodall, on the first ball of their innings. Then came Tazmin Brits on the crease who joined Anne Bosch but couldn’t accelerate their innings as she got dismissed after getting caught & bowled by Arlene Kelly in the third over, leaving her team struggling at 14-2.

Laura Wolvaardt came on the crease & anchored their innings for some time. She scored 20 runs in 22 balls before she was caught by Celeste Raack on Cara Murray’s delivery in the 9th over. Captain Sune Luus joined hands with Bosch on the crease but the latter was sent back to the pavilion after registering a 35-run stand by Arlene Kelly.

It was then Chloe Tryon who provided some momentum to South Africa as she played decent innings. Along with Luus she took her team over the 110-run mark & kept the scoreboard moving for them. But it was Leah Paul who had the last laugh as she dismissed Tyron after scoring 26 runs off 15 balls in the 18th over, leaving Africa women reeling at 117-5.

In the 19th over, the equation read 18 runs off 6 balls. Jane Maguire then restricted South Africa at 133-7 after Trisha Chetty was run-out in the 20th over, thus providing Ireland with a 10-run win.
