Afghanistan confirms their participation in the T20 World Cup 2021 amid rising Political Tensions

Latest Cricket News: Afghanistan will participate in the upcoming T20 World Cup to be held in the UAE, despite the ongoing political unrest in the country.

The Afghanistan Cricket Board has confirmed the national team’s presence in the mega event. Meanwhile, Afghanistan is also gearing up for a tri-series involving Australia & West Indies organized to accelerate the preparations for the upcoming T20 World Cup.

Afghanistan national team media manager Hikmat Hassan confirmed that the plans are formulated for the team’s involvement in the T20 World Cup in the UAE. Speaking to ANI Hikmat said, “Yes, we will play in the T20 World Cup. The preparations are on and the available players will be back to training in Kabul in the next few days. We are looking for a venue for the tri-series involving Australia and West Indies and that will be the best preparation for the showpiece event. We are speaking to some countries like Sri Lanka and also I think Malaysia. Let’s see how that pans out.”

Afghanistan will also participate in an ODI series against Pakistan before the start of the T20 World Cup 2021. The three-match ODI series was slated to take plave in the UAE but due to the unavailability of the grounds due to the IPL the ODI series will now be hosted in Sri Lanka at Mahinda Rajapaksa Stadium in Hambantota

ACB chairman Farhan Yusefzai also met the Afghanistan National Cricket team ahead of their Sri Lanka tour & motivated them to play the upcoming ODI series against Pakistan with a patriotic spirit and a positive mindset. The ACB team manager has confirmed that the ODI series against Pakistan will go as per the schedule between September 1 & September 5.

“We are already set to play Pakistan in Hambantota and that series is also on,” said the media manager. “Also, we are planning to go ahead with the domestic T20 tournament which shall boost preparations for the players ahead of the T20 World Cup.

“We are always there to help our players and their families. We will do whatever is possible for them. Things are not affected much in Kabul, we are already back in the office, so there is nothing to worry about,” he added.

Talking about the T20 World cup, the two groups of the mega event selected on the basis of team rankings as of March 20, 2021, includes West Indies along with England, Australia & South Africa in Group 1 of the Super 12s with two qualifiers from Round 1 joining them. Group 2 will comprise former Champions India & Pakistan, New Zealand, Afghanistan & the other two qualifiers from Round 1. Eight teams will play the first round including automatic qualifiers Sri Lanka & Bangladesh with the remaining six who booked their spot through the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup Qualifier 2019. Ireland, Netherlands, & Nambia to join Sri Lanka in Group A while Oman, PNG & Scotland will face Bangladesh in Group B.
