Former New Zealand Captain Chris Cairns Paralysed after life-saving surgery

Latest Cricket News: Former New Zealand all-rounder Chris Cairns is paralyzed in his legs after he suffered a ‘stroke in his spine during lifesaving heart surgery in Sydney.

Chris Cairns has suffered an aortic dissection in his heart earlier this month & has undergone several operations since then. He was transferred to a specialist hospital in Sydney for proper treatment. According to stuff., Cairns has returned to Canberra but is still in serious condition. “During the life-saving emergency heart surgery, Chris Cairns underwent in Sydney he has suffered a stroke in his spine. This has resulted in paralysis in his legs”, quoted the statement of Cairn’s lawyer Aaron Llyod.

“As a result, he will be undertaking a rehabilitation process at a specialist hospital in Australia. Chris & his family appreciates the immense public support they have received during this difficult time. They also appreciated the way in which their privacy has been respected”.

“Chris & his family want to focus on spending time together where possible & making whatever progress they can in his recovery. We will surely update everyone when there is more news, but that is some time away”, Cairn’s Lawyer added in his statement.

Chris Cairns has played 62 Tests, 215 ODIs & two T20I matches for New Zealand during 1989-2006 before becoming a television commentator. He was one of the best all-rounders of his era especially in the T20I format of cricket.

The former all-rounder has amassed 3,320 test runs at an average of over 33 & took 218 wickets at an average of just over 29. In ODIs, he scored 4,950 runs at an average of 29.46 & scalped 201 wickets at an average of 32.80. He was also named as one of the five Wisden Cricketers of the year in 2000.

His father had represented the New Zealand National Cricket team. He is the son of New Zealand’s former all-rounder, Lance Cairns. Chris Cairns was also alleged of match-fixing in India as a captain of the Chandigarh Lions in the Indian Cricket League in the year 2008. However, Cairns denied any wrongdoings & fought several legal cases to clear his name from the matter.
