NZ vs ENG 2022: Henry Nicholls suffers an injury ahead of their England Tour

The New Zealand Cricket team suffered a major blow as Henry Nicholls sustains a calf injury during training ahead of their departure to England for the three-match Test series. The left-handed middle-order player, Nicholls sustained an injury to his right leg when doing running drills at a pre-tour camp in Mt Maunganui on Monday. Nicholls was taken for scans on Monday & an update on his availability will be expected in the next 1-2 days.

“He’s having an MRI scan later today, so we’ll know more after that as to the extent of it,” Stead said. “But he’s got it strapped up and I guess the next 24 to 48 hours will give us an indication of how serious that is.”

Nicholls is a part of New Zealand’s Test team & has shone bright with the bat after scoring eight centuries in 46 matches with an average of 40.38. If Nicholls gets ruled out of England’s tour, then New Zealand will have to search for a perfect backup option for their middle order.

There is also uncertainty over the availability of New Zealand’s key players- Kane Williamson, Devon Conway, Trent Boult, Tim Southee, and Daryl Mitchell who are currently participating in the IPL 2022. Their availability for the tour depends on the progress of their franchisees in the IPL 2022.

Initially, New Zealand Cricket board had announced a huge 20 members Test squad to cover the absence of their main players. However, the NZC board is expected to name a reduced 15-member squad before the opening test of the series.

Meanwhile, New Zealand’s touring team is slated to depart for the UK in two groups on Saturday & Sunday. New Zealand’s Test tour of England comprises three-Test fixtures to be played from June 2 to June 27. New Zealand’s Test team will also play two warm-up matches at the end of May, before the start of the Test series in June.
