KXIP went from dust to sky after winning third consecutive match in the IPL 2020 by beating Delhi Capitals with spectacular five wickets with one over still left in their hands. Chasing 165 runs for victory, KXIP were helped by Nicholas Pooran scalped 53 runs off 28 balls & Gayle was scoring 25 runs in just one over. Pooran & Gayle’s outstanding stint overshadowed Dhawan’s second century scored in this IPL season. Dhawan finished unbeaten on 106 runs becoming the first batsman to hit consecutive centuries in a single IPL season, but he found little support from the other batsmen which ended up with DC finishing with a below average totals.
In reply to Dhawan’s century Gayle scored 29 runs off 13 balls, hitting the fast bowler for 4, 4, 6, 4, and 6 in one over before Ashwin cut short Gayle’s stint with bat by sending him back to the pavilion. The Gayle show came after KXIP had lost the Orange Cap holder & Captain KL Rahul in the third over on scoring 15 runs.
Ashwin’s dismissal of Gayle brought another partnership of Pooran & mayank resulting in a terrific defeat of DC in today’s match. However, Pooran made up for that run out by smashing DC’s bowlers to all parts & bringing up his second IPL century off just 27 balls with six fours and three sixes. He added 69 runs with Glenn Maxwell for the fourth wicket in just 6.4 overs to put DC in the back seat. Although Pooran and Maxwell were dismissed in the second half of the innings, KXIP had the batting depth to ensure they eased to victory & climbed up on fifth spot in the IPL 2020 Points Table by scoring 8 points from 10 matches.
Earlier DC captain Shreyas Iyer won the toss & batted first. Prithvi Shaw scored 7 runs went back to the pavilion very early but Dhawan carried on from where he had left the match against Chennai Super Kings – he finished 101 not out against CSK. Dhawan brought up his half century his fourth successive fifty-plus score in IPL 2020 – in just 28 balls and even though Iyer (14) and the returning Rishabh Pant (14) didn’t hold fort for long, the Delhi batsman remained unbeaten through the innings in the second IPL match.
Mohammed Shami was the star bowler for KXIP by scoring 2 for 28 runs from four overs. Maxwell, Jimmy Neesham and Murugan Ashwin got a wicket each. For Delhi, Kagiso Rabada (2 for 27), Axar Patel (1 for 27) and Ashwin (1 for 27) were economical, but their team just didn’t have enough runs on the board.
