PSL 6: Usman Khwaja’s maiden PSL century along with three wickets scalped by Akif Javed took Islamabad United towards a thrilling 15 runs victory over Peshawar Zalmi at Sheikh Zayed Stadium on Thursday. Peshawar Zalmi came into a face-off with Islamabad United in the 26th match of the PSL 6 being played in Abu Dhabi.
After being sent to bat first, Islamabad United registered a mammoth total of 247 runs which is the highest score in the history of HBL PSL. It is also the highest total scored in any domestic Pakistan T20 league surpassing the score of 243 runs set by Karachi Dolphins against Lahire Eagles in the year 2010.
Usman Khwaja who is leading Islamabad United in the absence of Shadab Khan opened the batting along with Colin Munro. Together the two registered a solid 98 runs stand in just 59 balls. Munro brought up 48 runs off 28 balls before getting dismissed on Shoaib Malik’s off-spin delivery on the second last ball of the 10th over. Asif Ali scored a quick-fire 43 runs off 14 balls. He stitched 47 runs partnership for the second wicket with Usman Khwaja.
Brandon King joined Usman Khwaja on the 15th over & together the duo played 360 shots around the stadium. The duo registered an unbeaten 102 runs off 43 balls for the third wicket. Usman Khwaja who is playing his first season of PSL brought up his maiden PSL ton in just 53 balls. He became the first captain to score a hundred in the PSL. He hit 13 fours & three sixes to remain unbeaten on 105 runs off 56 balls. His partner Brandon scored 46 runs off 22 balls hitting five boundaries & three maximums.
In response to Islamabad United’s 247 runs target, Peshawar Zalmi fell short of 15 runs to chase the mammoth target. For Peshawar Zalmi, Kamran Akmal & Shoaib Malik registered blistering half-centuries. Shoaib Malik scored 68 runs off 36 balls & Kamran hit 53 runs to bring up a scintillating 53 runs stand for the third wicket. Peshawar Zalmi’s were able to surpass 200 runs marks, thanks to the late onslaught from Wahab Riaz & Umaid Asif who brought up 47 runs stand for the seventh wicket. However, Riaz’s 28 runs off 15 balls & Asif’s 20 runs off nine balls went in vain as they were not able to chase the target of 247 runs. For Islamabad United, Akif Javed scalped 3 wickets while Hussain Talat scalped two wickets to defend their total of 247 runs.
