Bangladesh have all-rounder Shakib-Al-Hasan will skip a test & ODI series against Sri-Lanka to play in the IPL 2021, Bangladesh Cricket Board said on Friday.
“Shakib gave us a letter stating that he would like to skip the series against Sri Lanka to play in the IPL. We accepted his plea as we don’t want to force someone who is reluctant,” BCB operations chairman Akram Khan told AFP. Shakib was picked by Kolkata Knight Riders for Rs 3.2 crore in the auction held in Chennai on Thursday for the next IPL beginning in April. It has become common the players to miss International duties to participate in the cash rich IPL tournament.
England will be without the services of Ben Stokes, Jofra Archer, Jos Butler & others for the start of New Zealand’s tour of England in the month of June. Bangladesh are scheduled to travel to Sri-Lanka in April & May to play in the test series before playing against Sri-Lanka at home in a three match ODI series shortly afterwards.
The series was initially scheduled for late 2020 in Sri-Lanka but was delayed when both the sides failed to agree on the duration of the quarantine period for the touring players. Bangladesh have already granted Shakib-Al-Hasan leave to skip next month’s ODI & T20I series in New Zealand to be with his expectant wife in the US.
In January, Shakib returned to International Cricket to face the West Indies team after serving a ban of one year for his failure to report corrupt approaches. He became Player of the Series in his comeback ODI series but could play only half of the test series due to a thigh injury he contracted during the first test in Chittagong.
