Sky Sports pays tribute to Shane Warne, renames their Commentary Box on the legends name

After 23 overs on day one of the maiden LV= Insurance Test between England and New Zealand, Lord’s rose as one to pay respect to the late, great Shane Warne.

Legends stay alive forever in our hearts, and England has proven that by paying a fitting tribute to the iconic cricketer. After retiring from cricket in 2006, Warne captivated audiences with his on-air cricket commentary. Sky commentary panel has preserved Warne’s legacy by renaming their commentary box on Warne’s name.

Warne, the famous Australian leg-spinner, died in March at the age of 52 due to a cardiac arrest, and his life and career were commemorated in the ENG vs NZ 1st Test.

During his playing days, Warne donned the No. 23 jersey in honor of his childhood hero, Australian rules footballer Dermott Brereton. And to pay tribute to the legendary pacer, After 23 overs of the innings, fans and players at Lord’s observed silence for 23 seconds. Shane Warne is one of the greatest pacers of World Cricket as he took 708 wickets in 145 Tests, second only to Sri Lanka’s Muttiah Muralitharan.

In a partnership between the Marylebone Cricket Club and Sky Sports, the main commentary box in the J.P. Morgan Media Centre was renamed after Warne earlier in the day.

Following his retirement from cricket, Warne became a popular part of Sky Sports’ punditry team, with his former colleague Rob Key, who is now managing director of England men’s cricket. “He is just one of the best individuals ever,” Key applauded Warne.

Former Australian captain Mark Taylor was also impressed with England’s heart-warming gesture for Shane Warne. He said it is an incredible honor to have your name etched in Mecca of Cricket.

“Having a commentary box named after you at Lord’s, where you sought to overcome the old enemy, is a big honor,” said Taylor.
