Lockdown has resulted in a financial crisis that has seriously affected the entire country and some of the former Indian cricketers are also the worst hit due to this forced break. The ICA has decided to raise funds to help the former Indian cricketers who are in need of help. The ICA has so far raised Rs 39 lakh & to contribute this novel initiative Sunil Gavaskar & Kapil Dev joined ICA’s initiative to help former cricketers who are in need of funds.
ICA President Ashok Malhotra said Star legendary cricketers Sunil Gavaskar & Kapil Dev have pledged to support the ICA initiative to financially help around 30 needy players amid the nationwide lockdown. The ICA has so far raised a good 39 lakh to help the former cricketers who are in need of funds. “Legendary cricketers like Sunil Gavaskar, Kapil Dev, Gautam Gambhir, and Gundappa Viswanath have joined our initiative and that is a major boost to our initiative. A corporate firm from Gujarat has also extended its support to ICA”, Ashok Malhotra said to media.
It is said that just like Sunil Gavaskar & Kapil Dev, Gautam Gambhir have also made financial contributions to this novel cause. Earlier this week, former Indian Captain Mohammad Azharuddin has also extended his financial support to ICA’s initiative.
The ICA has decided to accept donations till May 15 & it will shortlist 5-6 cricketers from each zone to be helped through this initiative. “the Cricketers who don’t have any job, who don’t get the pension from the BCCI or their respective state associations will be offered help”, Malhotra had said earlier.
The ICA has contributed Rs 10 lakh for the initiative. The ICA is India’s first-ever player’s association which established last year, it has as many as 1750 former cricketers registered with it. The ICA’s association had received an initial grant of Rs 2 crore from the BCCI in February to kick-start its operations.
