three suspended cricketers landed in Sri Lanka

The trio Sri-Lankan cricketers, Danushka Gunathilaka, Kusal Mendis, and Niroshan Dickwella have landed in Sri Lanka & are currently quarantining in a hotel. They will stay in isolation for 14 days after which they will face an inquiry by the Sri Lanka Cricket Board.

The trio was caught in a video, violating bubble protocols in England by roaming on the streets of Durham. The video was circulated by a fan on social media & the trio faced sheer criticism as the fans were already disappointed by their below-average performance in the recently concluded T20I series. “We will have an inquiry after they are out of their 14 day quarantine period,” an SLC official said as quoted by The Wire.

Sri Lanka cricket on Monday suspended three players including Kusal Mendis and wicketkeeper Niroshan Dickwella for breaching the bio-bubble protocols during their ongoing tour of England & ordered the cricketers to immediately return back to Sri Lanka. The trio was seen roaming on the streets of Durham after the conclusion of the final T20I on Sunday night which Sri Lanka lost by huge 69 runs. All three players were a part of the Playing XI in the T20I series.

“Sri Lanka Cricket Executive Committee has suspended Kusal Mendis, Danushka Gunathilaka & Niroshan Dickwella for breaching the bio- bubble and they will be immediately recalled to Sri Lanka,” SLC secretary Mohan De Silva said in a statement. Reacting to the video, which was posted by a Sri Lankan fan, SLC chief Shammi Silva said, “An investigation is underway as they have breached the (code of) conduct.”

Sri Lanka faced a series whitewash by 0-3 against England in the Three match T20I series which ended on Sunday. This was Lanka’s fifth series loss in T20Is since October 2020. The defeat also led the National team to face criticism from former legends such as Sanath Jayasuriya, Muttiah Muralitharan, Roshan Mahanama, Hashan Thilakaratne, and Tillakaratne Dilshan who expressed their disappointment at the poor performance displayed by the Sri Lankan team. Sri Lanka is slated to play three-match ODI series against England starting from June 30 at Chester Le Street.
