T20 World Cup 2021: Sri Lanka enters the race of staging the Mega Event

Sri lanka enters the race of hosting the T20 World Cup 2021

The BCCI has been discussing the hosting of the T20 World Cup 2021 in UAE with the Emirates Cricket Board. However, in a recent turn of events, Sri Lanka has entered the race of staging the T20 World Cup to help India host the mega event.

Speaking to the ANI, the sources who are aware of the developments said, while the BCCI is having a discussion with the ECB Officials, there have been talks with Sri Lanka Cricket as well to stage the event.

“See, there is no denying the fact that the BCCI & ECB Officials have been having discussions on staging the mega event in the UAE, considering the COVID-19 situation in India. But what we need to consider is that the hosting of the IPL would mean a few games, not to forget other tournaments or matches that might be held in some of the venues & tired wickets by the time of the World Cup”, the source said.

Keeping the playing conditions in mind, there have been some talks with the SLC Officials. Too early to get into the details, but we still have some time before we need to get back to the ICC to inform them of the situation. As the BCCI will continue to have the hosting rights even if the World Cup is played outside India”, the source explained.

Sri Lanka has a lot of Options available for the Venue of the T20 World Cup

While as far the venues are considered, the UAE has three venues in Sharjah, Dubai & Abu Dhabi. Whereas Sri Lanka will have a lot of options with Colombo along having three stadiums. Sri Lanka Cricket has also expressed its intentions to help the BCCI with hosting the remaining matches of the IPL 2021 during the September-October window.

The Sources also said that if the host broadcasters could support India if they do wish to look at Sri Lanka as an option to stage the T20 World Cup. “These are tough times & with the COVID-19 it is an ever-changing situation. So don’t think that the host broadcaster would mind supporting the BCCI if they look forward to opting for Sri Lanka as a venue for staging the T20 World Cup 2021. Keeping options open is not a bad idea at all”, the source added to its statement.

The BCCI has to inform the ICC by 28th June about their position of hosting the Mega Event in India

However the source said, that the BCCI first needs to submit the tax exemptions guarantee to the ICC By June 15, & then the things will be discussed one after the other, as the Board has to inform the ICC by 28th June about their position of hosting the T20 World Cup in India.

Earlier the ICC & BCCI had met on Sunday 6th June, to discuss various issues in hosting T20 World Cup which is to be played later this year. A source in the know of the developments said that in yesterday’s meeting, the BCCI & ICC discussed UAE as an option to host the mega event. Further team’s stay & Qualifiers to be conducted in Oman & bio-bubbles for players was also discussed during the meet.

However, the source stated that nothing has been finalized yet & the call on the venue for hosting the T20 World Cup will be taken later on. The ICC has confirmed the fact that the BCCI will continue to have hosting rights of the ICC T20 World Cup 2021 even if the event is hosted outside India.
