The Men’s T20 World Cup 2021 could be shifted from India to the UAE said ICC on Tuesday. ICC further said that the final call on the host country of the T20 World Cup 2021 would be taken later this month. ICC cleared in its statement that no matter where the mega event will be played, the BCCI will retain the hosting rights of the 2021 T20 World Cup.
“The ICC board has requested management focus its planning efforts for the ICC men’s T20 World Cup 2021 on the event being staged in the UAE with the possibility of including another venue in the Middle East,” the statement said.
“A final decision on the host country will be taken later this month. The Board also confirmed that the BCCI will remain the hosts of the event regardless of where the event is played,” it stated.
ICC’s statement came just two days after the BCCI announced that the cash-rich IPL 2021 which was suspended midway would be completed in the UAE in the window of September-October. BCCI also requested the ICC to provide them time till 28th June to make a decision on whether India could stage the T20 World Cup or not.
Speaking to ANI, BCCI President Sourav Ganguly confirmed the same. “We have time till June 28 to go back to the ICC on hosting of the T20 World Cup,” Ganguly said. As per the reports by the PTI, the BCCI has requested ICC to grant them one month’s time to provide the ICC board with a detailed assessment of the health scenario in India, which is currently being rampant by the second wave of COVID-19.
“Yes, the ICC board has agreed to BCCI’s request and they will have time till June 28 to decide on hosting the T20 World Cup in India. They will come back to the board next month with a concrete plan,” a source close to the ICC Board told PTI on Tuesday.
If the tournament gets shifted to the UAE, then the mega event will be staged after the completion of the IPL 2021, which will get over by October 10.
