New Zealand became World Champions by winning the inaugural WTC title at the Ageas Bowl in Southampton on Wednesday. With three runs needed to win the WTC final, Ross Taylor hit Mohammed Shami towards the square leg fence to seal in victory for New Zealand in style. The ICC took to Instagram to share the scenes from inside the New Zealand dressing room that followed after Taylor hit the winning shot.

“WTC21 | Euphoria in the Black Caps dressing room The @blackcapsnz dressing room the moment @rossltaylor3 hit the winning runs in the #WTC21 Final,” the video was captioned on Instagram.

In the video, the pacers Tim Southee & Trent Boult can be seen jumping in joy inside the dressing room. Ross Taylor stayed unbeaten on 47 runs while the New Zealand captain stayed unbeaten on 52 runs as they chased the 139 runs target with eight wickets in spare.

The loss of India in the WTC final is a big heartbreak for Virat Kohli under whom India suffered another major defeat in an ICC knockout game. Previously India had lost the ICC Champions Trophy final in 2017 & the semi-final of the ODI World Cup in 2019 with Kohli being the captain of team India.

In the WTC final, India was bowled out for 217 runs after being sent to bat first by New Zealand. The first & fourth day of WTC final was washed out due to rain in Southampton. However, New Zealand showed great determination & posted a total of 249 runs in first innings by taking a lead of 32 runs.

In response to New Zealand’s 249 runs total, India’s batting order faced a downfall on Day 6 of the match & was bundled up for 170 runs. Chasing 139 runs for victory, Williamson & Taylor took New Zealand towards a comfortable victory & won their first major ICC Trophy.
