Black Caps looked in trouble due to early fall of wickets
The match unfolded with New Zealand winning the toss & opting to bat first. Batting first, New Zealand got off to a poor start as they lost their opener Allen in the first over reducing Black Caps to 4-1 in 0.3 overs. However then came Kane Williamson on the crease who joined hands with Conway to revive the Black Caps innings. They stitched a 34-run stand for the second wicket. The moment Conway opened his arms he was run out for 21 runs off 20 balls, followed by Glenn Phillips (6) reducing New Zealand to 49-3 in 7.8 overs. However, Kane Williamson on the other end was going strong with the willow. He stitched a rewarding 68-run stand with Daryl Mitchell to carry things forward.
Williamson smashed the Pakistan bowler for regular boundaries to keep the Black Caps scoreboard ticking. He amassed 46 runs off 42 balls with one four & one six before getting dismissed in the 17th over. But Mitchell stayed unbeaten till the end. He made the mockery of Pakistan bowlers & finished their innings after scoring 53 runs off 35 balls with three fours & a six. Neesham too contributed with a quick cameo of 16 runs off 12 balls. As a result, in the end, New Zealand ended their innings at 152 runs in 20 overs. For Pakistan, the pick of the bowler was Shaheen Afridi who finished with figures of 2-24.
Rizwan-Azam’s blitzkrieg promised Pakistan Finals Berth
In reply, Pakistan got off to a swashbuckling start with openers Mohammad Rizwan & Babar Azam finding their form back. The duo replicated the scenes of last year’s World Cup by stitching a rewarding stand of 105 runs for the first wicket. The duo played effortlessly & smashed boundaries in almost every over. They brought up their respective half-centuries to help Pakistan have an edge over its opponents. Babar Azam scored 53 runs off 42 balls in an innings embellished with seven fours. While Rizwan went one step ahead by scoring 57 off 43 balls with five boundaries.
After their dismissals in the 13th & 17th over, Mohammed Haris took the matter into his hands. He scored 30 runs off 26 balls to ensure Pakistan is not behind the required run rate. In the end, Pakistan chased the target in 19.1 overs to finish their innings at 153-3. For New Zealand, the fast bowler was Trent Boult who returned with figures of 2-33.
Now the second semifinal of the marquee event will be played between India & England on Thursday 10th November. The winner of the second semifinals will march into the final at the MCG on 13th November.
