Thereafter, it was the spectacular knock of Glenn Phillips who scored an explosive 104 to snatch the game away for New Zealand. Alongside Daryl Mitchell (22), Phillips posted a match-winning partnership of 84 runs for the fourth wicket.
For Sri Lanka, Kasun Rajitha was the pick of the bowlers as he scalded 2 wickets for 23 runs. Theekshana (1/35), de Silva (1/14), Hasaranga (1/22), and Kumara (1/37) chipped in a wicket apiece.
Sri Lanka succumbed in front of New Zealand’s bowling attack
Chasing a steep total of 168 runs, Sri Lanka was shattered by a completely decisive Kiwi bowling attack. The frontline batting order led by Nissanka (0), Mendis (4), de Silva (0), Asalanka (4), and Karunaratne (3) struggled to find an answer to the deadly New Zealand pace bowling attack. Rajapaksa (34) and Shanaka (35) tried to put up a fightback but their efforts went in vain as the tailend failed to capitalize and Sri Lanka was bowled out for a mere 102 runs, losing the match by 65 runs.
For New Zealand, Trent Boult starred in the bowling attack with his stunning figures of 4/13. Santner (2/21) and Sodhi (2/21) grabbed a couple of wickets each whereas Southee (1/12) and Ferguson (1/35) scaled a wicket apiece.
