PAK vs ENG 1st Test Highlights: England scripts history by defeating Pakistan by 74 runs

PAK vs ENG 1st Test Highlights: England has scripted history by registering a gleaming 74-run win against Pakistan in the Rawalpindi Test. In the fixture which was a run-fest Pakistan’s warriors, Mohammed Ali & Naseem Shah fought bravely for the last 40 minutes to ensure the Test ended in a draw. But with Anderson & Robinson on the crease, it was not possible as the duo bagged four wickets to ensure that Pakistan couldn’t chase the target of 343 runs on Day 5 of the first Test. As a result, Pakistan’s innings were wrapped for 268 runs registering a huge 74 runs win.

Pakistan fought hard but failed to survive in front of England’s fiery attack

This victory is special as this was England’s first Test won in Pakistan in 17 long years since 2005. The icing on the cake is the fact that the Rawalpindi Test is the third-highest run-scoring fixture in Test history with a total of 1768 runs scored during the course of innings.

Earlier England made a bold & cleaver decision of declaring their innings at 264-7 on day 4. And chasing a target of 343 runs, Pakistan got off to a humiliating start as they lost their openers Babar Azam (4) & Shafique (6) early on Day 4 itself. Beginning Day 5 at 80-2, Imam Ul- Haq () & Shakeel Saud began Pakistan’s innings. The duo added 64 run-stand to stabilize Pakistan’s submerging innings. Soon their blooming stand was broken when Anderson removed Haq for 48 runs off 77 balls with eight fours. But Shakeel on the other hand held things firm.

He stitched an 87-run stand with Mohammed Rizwan. However, Anderson didn’t let their stand flourish further by dismissing Rizwan just four runs short of his half-century. Shakeel & Agha Salman on the crease kept the hopes of saving the Test alive. But then England resulted in a turnover with Shakeel getting dismissed for 76 runs off 159 balls. Pakistan was in a state of trouble as half of their side was back in the hut for 198 runs.

Robinson & Anderson wreaked havoc with the ball to end Pakistan’s winning hope

But Agha Salman & Azhar Ali on crease meant that Pakistan was still in contention for a draw. The duo took Pakistan over the 250 runs mark. But it was Robinson who had his last laugh by dismissing Agha Salman (30) & Azhar Ali (40) reducing Pakistan to 260-7. Pakistan needed more than 83 runs to win with three wickets in their hand. Their lower order comprising Naseem & Mohammed Ali stood on the crease for 10 overs & 50 minutes to save the first Test. But Jack Leach did the job for England by dismissing Naseem Shah to wrap Pakistan’s innings at 268 runs. For England, Anderson (4-36) & Robinson (4-50) starred with the ball by scalping crucial wickets & ending Pakistan’s hopes of saving the match.

In the first innings, England turned the heads around by posting a mammoth 657 runs total. In reply, Pakistan was wrapped for 579 runs in the first innings trailing England by 768 runs. Further England declared their second innings for 268 runs, posting a target of 343 runs for Pakistan to win. Ollie Pope was named as the man of the match for his knock of 108 runs with five wickets in his kitty.
