PAK vs NZ 1st Test: Bad light results in fixture ending in a Draw

PAK vs NZ 1st Test: Pakistan is hosting New Zealand for a historic and iconic two-match Test series. The first of the two-match Test series ended in a draw as bad light interrupted last day’s play where New Zealand was anchoring a famous victory by chasing a modest 138-run target set by the hosts.

Earlier in the match, Pakistan skipper Babar Azam had won the toss and elected to bat first at the National Stadium in Karachi. Backed on the solid 161-run knock by skipper Azam himself, Pakistan powered a stunning 438-run total in the first innings. Agha Salman (103) also played a pivotal supporting knock alongside his captain. Tim Southee (3/69) and Michael Bracewell (2/72) starred in the bowling attack for the Kiwis.

New Zealand retaliated with a spectacular batting performance in their first innings. Trailing by 438 runs, the Black Caps registered a mammoth 612/9 (dec) run total in their first innings. Skipper Kane Williamson remained unbeaten on 200 whereas Tom Latham played a glorious 113-run knock. For Pakistan, Abrah Ahmed (5/205) and Nauman Ali (3/185) were impressive in their bowling performance.

PAK vs NZ 1st Test: Azam made the bold decision of declaring the second innings at 311

Pakistan came out to bat in the second innings while trailing by 184 runs. Losing early wickets near the Stumps on Day 4, the hosts resumed Day five’s play on 77/2. Imam-ul-Haq played a thumping 96-run knock and was handsomely supported by Sarfaraz (53), Shakeel (55), and Wasim (43). Skipper Azam declared the innings on 311/8 to try their bowling fortunes and steal a win. Ish Sodhi (6/86) emerged as Pakistan’s troublemaker whereas Bracewell chipped in a couple of wickets for 82 runs.

New Zealand was set with a target of 138 runs in the fourth innings. Conway (18) and Latham (35) had already started to exploit Pakistani pacers to capitalize on their knocks with a greater strike rate and hunt down the total by the end of the day. However, the umpires called players off the field due to bad light while New Zealand was 61/1 and only 77 runs away from a famous victory.

The play did not resume as the match ended in a draw. The decisive second Test match is set to start on January 2 at the same venue.
