PAK vs SA Highlights, T20 WC 2022: Pakistan keeps Playoff Hopes alive with a 33-run win

PAK vs SA Highlights, T20 WC 2022: Pakistan displayed a great character & clinched a gleaming 33-run win over mighty South Africa in a rain-curtailed 14 overs match to keep their playoff hopes alive.

Shadab, Itikhar’s fifties laid the foundation of a Victory

The match unfolded with Pakistan batting first. As usual Pakistan’s top-order failed to deliver with the bat as Mohammad Rizwan (4) was sent back to the hut in the first over reducing Pakistan to 4-1. Mohammad Haris & Babar Azam then provided some resistance to help Pakistan recover from an early jolt. Though Babar was struggling to score, Fakhar’s replacement Haris was going strong with the willow. He smashed 28 runs off 11 balls with two fours & three sixes to accelerate Pakistan’s innings.

However, Proteas bounced back in the game by removing Haris in the fifth over followed by Azam (5) in the sixth over reducing Pakistan to 40-3 in 6.3 overs. Then came Iftikhar Ahmed & Mohammad Nawaz on the crease who stage a comeback for Pakistan by stitching a 52-run stand for the fifth wicket. The duo opened their arms & smashed South African bowlers across the park. Their blooming stand was broken when Shamsi caught Nawaz for LBW in the 12th over. Nawaz went back after scoring 28 runs off 22 balls braced with four fours & one six.

After Nawaz’s dismissal, Shadab Khan came on the crease & then the table got turned towards Proteas. Shadab joined hands with Iftikhar Ahmed to weave a rewarding 82-run stand for the sixth wicket. Shadab khan amassed 52 runs off 22 balls in an innings full of three fours & four sixes. While Iftikhar ended their innings on 51 runs off 35 balls with three fours & two sixes. They took the South African bowling attack to cleaners & helped their side to post a competitive 185 on board in the allotted 20 overs. For South Afroca Anrich Nortje starred with the ball after returning with figures of 4-41.

South Africa lost the momentum in front of PAK’s Pace Attack

In reply, South Africa got off to a disastrous start as they lost De Kock (0) & Rossouw (7) early in the power-play overs reducing South Africa to 16-2. However, this match saw the comeback of South African Captain Temba Bavuma who stitched 49-run stand for the third wicket with Aiden Markram. Temba Bavuma smashed 36 off 19 balls with four fours & one six while Aiden Makram smashed 20 runs off 14 balls with four fours.

Soon their blooming stand was broken when Pakistan bowlers struck to remove Bavuma & Markram reducing proteas to 66-4 in 7.3 overs. New batters Klaasen & Stubbs were out on the crease & then rain played the spoilsport resulting in the stoppage of the play. The game resumed after a long time resulting in the reduction of the game to 14 overs with a revised target of 142 runs. That means South Africa needed 73 runs off five overs.

But after the resumption of the game, Proteas kept losing wickets at regular intervals. Klaasen (15 off 9) & Stubbs (18 off 18) played quick cameos to keep South Africa alive in the chase. However, once they were sent back to the hut in the 13th over things were all but over for South Africa. The lower order failed to hit the straps as a result South Africa could score only 108 runs in 14 overs handing a 33-run win to Pakistan.  For Pakistan Shaheen Afridi (3-14) & Shadab Khan (2-16) starred with the ball

PAK vs SA Highlights, T20 WC 2022: Brief Scores

Pakistan 185-9 (Shadab Kahn 52, Iftikhar Ahmed 51; Nortje 4-41) South Africa 108-9 (Bavuma 36, Markram 20; Shaheen Shah Afridi 3-14)
