Rashid Khan replaces Mohammad Nabi as T20I captain

Rashid Khan gets reappointed as Afghanistan’s T20I Captain, replacing Mohammad Nabi who had stepped down from the position after the T20 World Cup 2022. He is not new in this role having led the Afghanistan team across formats ACB Chairman, Mirwais Ashraf further said that Rashid’s experience of playing in different T20 leagues would help him to take Afghanistan’s T20I team to a new level.

Rashid Khan will take up the reins of T20I Captaincy from Afghanistan’s tour of UAE in February 2023 where Afghanistan will play three T20Is.

Speaking about his appointment, Rashid Khan said that Captaincy is a huge responsibility for an individual. He further said that he has led the country before & it’s an honor for him to take up the position again. He also emphasized the fact that there are few players with whom Rashid shares a good rapport & feels comfortable to play with. He ensured that he will try his best & help his team to stick together, work on putting things on track & bring pride to the country back.

A Glimpse of Rashid Khan’s Previous Stint as Captain

Rashid khan was named Afghanistan’s T20I Captain back in September 2019 & was serving in the role till November 2019 recording four wins in seven fixtures. Overall, Afghanistan has won just seven out of 16 fixtures across formats under Rashid’s captaincy. The ACB has been keen on handing over the captaincy to Rashid in the last two years. However, in June 2021 Rashid declined the leadership fearing that it would affect his performance as a player. But still, he took up the responsibility of the T20 format in July 2021 when he was appointed as the Captain for T20 World Cup last October.

But things were not happening for Rashid as Afghanistan couldn’t create an impact during the T20 World Cup 2021 & was eliminated during the league stage fixtures. Immediately after Afghanistan’s exit from the marquee event, Rashid resigned from his post stating that the committee & ACB hadn’t consulted him in selecting a team & as a result, Nabi took over the Captaincy.

“Rashid Khan is a massive name in Afghanistan Cricket,” Ashraf said. “He has colossal experience playing the format around the world which will help him take the team to a new level in the format,” Ashraf added to his statement.

Whether the appointment of stalwart Rashid Khan as Afghanistan’s Captain would turn destiny in their favor or not is what time will say.
